Depending on your eating habits and body shape. If you are large frame and a have a pounds to lose, then it may take a couple of months to notice changes in the abs. You could lower your daily intake a few calories or eat a couple more servings of protein.

If you have a "pooch" and f your'e goal is to have amazing abs then you will have to ad cardio to your workout to see significant results. Crunches without cardio tighten the abdominals; but the layer of fat remains; specifically if you have an apple-shaped body like myself (central obesity rules with apple shapes!)
So unfortunately, cardio is the only way to go...but think outside of the box. Instead of the run of the mill treadmill; try dancing, skating, biking, power walking, and even renting workout videos from the library. Mix it up and you won't be bored.
But if you want a lasting hot bod (key word: lasting)..your'e going to have to put in the work in. Diets don't work and it's like putting your body through a train wreck. It's not even worth it.

There are more than just your abs in your trunk. If you want to see a well toned waist (both front and back) you need to do exercises that tone ALL those muscles.
For toning the muscles at the sides of your waist, you can do sidewise crunches (lying towards your left side, raise your body to the right in your crunch, and vice versa for the other side). Or obliques (lying on your back and twisting to left or right as you do crunches). The only exercise for the back muscles are to stand straight (no bend in knees), bend your trunk as far forward as possible. Keeping trunk rigid, raise and lower it in a "back crunch" movement, using resistance of all muscles always.
A hundred repetitions of ALL of these will give you a well toned trunk in no time.

You need to mix cardio and weight training for best results. Just doing crunches won't do it.
