SHAG ! ! ! They still make that ?
I would go with a mid range height of a pile. Not as hard as shag to vacume and still give you a good feel. Carpet quality depends on how many loops of carpet per square inch. The more the better the grade of carpet..Rather it is a long weive or short. You shouldn't be able to spread the fiber and see the backing of the carpet in doing so.
A carpet , no matter the quality, will always perform better and wear less when a higher grade padding is under it.

Less traffic areas would look and feel more comfortable with a higher pile/plush carpet. The higher taffic area..definitely a burbur or lower level. rug Burbur wears forever and never mats down. It is especially great in rec rooms or childrens rooms, hallways or enterance ways. Easier to maintain.

I'd go with the thick in most areas except the stairs and hallways. Vacuuming is vacuuming: a necessary evil. Choose what you like based on what will make you happen, not on how easy it will be to vacuum.

It all comes down to personal preference. However you may not want a thicker carpet in high traffic areas, it will look bad from the wear and tear. It is usually mostly in bedrooms that people use it.
So it really depends upon where you want to put it.

probably thick for the bedrooms as it feels really comfty and
thin for the living room as it has more traffic and gets dirty
more easily which would need more regular vacuuming.
