I had one inserted when i went for my 6 week check up after my second baby. I will never look back on my decision! Besides 1 heavy period and cramps that accompanied the period I have had no problems whatsoever. I would definitely recommend it! Believe me I have tried various contraceptive from the diff pills tot he diff injections and they all made me moody as hell. The IUD has been fantastic as I have had no mood swings at all and feel like a new person! I should have done it ages ago!

After my first child 7 years ago, I went on the pill. I already had a history of headaches. Taking the Pill made them worse. I was sick and either at the ER or the MD's office most of the time. Finally my doctor took me off the Pill saying I would have a stroke at 20 if I continued. Spermicide suppositories worked for 7 years with me. After my second child, I got the Mirena IUD. Yes, it's hormones too but I have had none of the sickness and pain I went through with the Pill. I was skeptical about it but not now. My periods are few and far in between and you don't even know it's there. No worries until 5 years later when you have to go get a new one. Best of all if you decide tomorrow, next month or next year you want to get pregnant, just have your doc take it out in his office and you can get pregnant immediantly or whenever you want.

I havent used one, but after this baby is born iam thinking of getting one, so i've been looking into them.
Mirena actually releases hormones, which is something none of the others do, and its a non estrogene hormone which means there a lot less side effects.
Inserting it is fairly quick too, takes about five minutes start to finish, its inserted through a tube into your uterus... kinda the same way we insert a tampon. Strings are trimmed to hang just outside of the cervix, and those strings are checked at your visits.
The hormones thin the lining of your uterus, so your period becomes nill, or nothing at all. And its totally reversable all at once. You can start trying for kids once its removed. THey have a 1 year, 5 year, and ten year IUD, 5 is wht they generally use for younger women (under 40).
THe worst things I have ever heard, and that the company reports ever happening, is in rare instances the IUD tears through the uterine wall and has to be sergically removed. Iam not sure what causes this or if there are ways to avoid it, since i havent had a chance to ask my DR.
Its seriously worth considering.

I've had an IUD and had it for about 3 years - 5 years ago. For me it was a reliable contraception choice for that time in my life. I had two children already and wasn't ready for a third. (and at the time had a boyfriend that refused to put a raincoat on) Throughout it I had horrible pms, cramping and periods that lasted 10 days or more. When the IUD was going to expire I opted to not have another one put it and have relied on condoms since. (new much better boyfriend) I can't take bc pills so my options are limited. You need to to decide what will work best for you.

I have the Merena IUD. I love it! I don't have to worry about going to the doc every few months to get the shot, just my yearly paps. Insertion is pretty quick, it hurts a little, but not bad at all. It does cause bleeding, just for a little while after insertion. My OB told me I wouldn't get a period. They say IUD expel less in woman that have had a child. It can tear through the uterine wall, but I believe that's pretty rare. Any other questions, let me know!!

I had the hormonal kind not the copper one. It was a very simple procedure. Quick. They warned me about some minor back pain for a few days which did happen. What they didn't tell me is that IUD's have a tendency to shift or come out completely with your cycle.
If it stays where it's supposed to be it should be like 99% effective...... however. If it moves or shifts, or even comes out.......
there goes your percentage.
I prefer taking the pill. Then at least I know I'm ingesting it and that it is working.
Good luck

I have the hormonal IUD Mirena and Ive had it for 3 years I experienced soptting the 1st 3 months esp after sex but now Ive been period free look them up I think the two available today are
Paraguard (hormon less) and you may see an incress in our blood flow the 1st year along with more cramping but your period MAY subside to non existing. Good for up to 10 years
Mirena(hormones) is good for 5 yrs and has a small dose of hormones that stay localized . It dosent get into your blood stream. Your periods lessen and so does cramping until it disapeares.
And only recomended if u have 1 sex partner not bc its easier to get an infection but its harder to treat one IF you get one so if you dont have a a stable partner I would recomend condoms.
les than 1 in 10 women get pregnant with it within the 1st year
10 out of 100 will reject the IUD ( have been inserted inporperly)

My sister had an IUD and it got stuck and she got pregnant, after 8 to 10 weeks the IUD became free (not stuck) and she had a miscarriage! Don't know the brand but that is one complication, they can get stuck and you can become pregnant!

I'm not for sure which one I have, but it has been great. The first couple of months I had some side effects. Cramping and heavier bleeding, but it went away once my body adjusted. I have had mine for five years and its been a relief not to worry.
