We have had our Shitzu X Lhasa Apso for 6 years and he has always been the only dog and he seemed happy this way but my hubby and our daughter talked me into getting another dog so we went to the RSPCA (dog shelter in Australia) and bought ourselves a Shitzu X Pekanise 8 months old she is very playful and gorgeous she loves everyone but our first dog is not very impressed as she is always in his face trying to play (he is a lazy dog not into playing etc he just wants to lie around on the couch all day) so he is always snapping and growling at her - they haven fought at all but there is definately tension there on his behalf. We have only had the second dog for a few days so I know these things take time but Im wondering if they will go on like this till she gets a little older or learns to leave him alone (which I cant see as she is a delightfully playful little thing)

How have you got animals to get along in this situation?

I have always had More than one dog introducing them to each other when one would pass a way, they are like children, you just have to give them their place in the skeem of things. for example the older dog is the boss do not deter from that, feed him first give him treats first and pet him first then go to the other pup and do the same over and over and over This should help you show the puppy who is boss its you and the older dog will learn the same, i just introduced a 6yr old Schnauzer i have had with a huge great Dane I had for 6yrs they grew up together and I had to give him to my son because i could not give him the exercise he needed anymore. so i added a jack Russell to my Schnauzer and they are finding there own order of things and I'm just trying to help them my Russell is a male and the Schnauzer is a female fixed I've had him since July and they are now playing all the time its great every dog needs a dog to play with and keep company. Dogs are like people some times they just don't like each other but i do believe in the end they will find their own way of dealing with each other if they both feel secure with you. When my little jack messes with my Schnauzer and she just want to sleep or lay down i correct his behavior to let him know im the boss and back up my older dogs desire to lay down and not be messed with it works for me.

You didn't state how long its been.

It usually takes about a week for an older dog to get used to the new dog and realize its not going anywhere. If your older dog is not flat out trying to kill the puppy you should be fine in time. Puppies will figure out the older dog is not playing in time.

Im fostering an 8 week black and white beagle. Typical beagle nosey, needy and persistant. She has managed to get my border collie that hates all the fosters to let her lay next to her last night. We picked this foster up last thursday so it wasn't even a week. I bring dogs in and out of the house constantly doing rescue.

You may find in time the older lazy dog is playing and doing more. Its just out of his habit and he is learning to adjust.

It may take a month or more for your dog to accept the new dog.
He does not think she is a playmate just and inturder in his perfectly happy world. He did not want another dog and he was happy. It will take him some time to get used to her being around.
SInce they are male and female you should not have fighting problems once she learns he does not want to play all the time like she does.

The general rule with this is: if there is no blood there is no problem. They are squabbling. He is telling her to stop being obnoxious and to go away. She will eventually learn to respect his space when he asks for it. If your older dog doesnt even give her a chance, help him learn to like her by giving him cookies when she is near him. Gradually increase the space between them with cookies. I use this for my dog aggressive students. It helps change any kind of association or lack of one to something positive.

1st off-do not leave them unattended together. Puppies have away in aggravating older dogs. This could lead to death of a young puppy.
In time as she grows, tension will relax.
