If your DVD player is 'multi-region enabled'.
If it says so on the DVD unit's box (should you still have that...am I being to A* retentive here??) you should be fine.
If not, check out the web... there are many software downloads for most common players that can make your unit 'region free'... you often just find the right 'handset/remote control' code - type it in and away you go. Some may require you to find an unlock file, burn it to a disc and play it in your DVD player... job done.
Start with

and see how you get on. They have LOADS of 'handset' based 'region unlock hacks/codes' ...
Good luck.

It depends on a number of factors. In Europe we get region 2 DVDs. In the US they get region 1 DVDs. There are also other regions around the world. If your player is a region 2 only player then you will not be able to play the DVD if it is region 1 encoded. Some times a DVD will be region 0 meaning it will play in all regions.
If you have a muli-region DVD player then it might play any DVD from any region automatically. Some multi-region DVD players require you to 'switch' regions through some kind of menu system.
You will have to find out the details for your particular DVD player because they all approach the regioning issue differently.

or try searching in Google for 'DVD region hacks' appending your dvd players model number to the end of the search query.

Most uk purchased players are region 2 only, but some are multi-region or at least 1 and 2, you will have to look at the spec. of your machine. If it's R2 then you will have to change the region code,(handbook?) or search for 'DVD REGION HACKS' and you will probably find your make/model listed.

some dvd players will allow you to change the regions, usually by going into the player firmware, using a combination of the DVD buttons and the remote contol buttons.
