I was on atkins for 1 year. Drop 65 pounds. Now 1.5 year later, I am about 20 pounds away from original weight. if you stop atkins, you must remain on some sort of lower carb diet. You will gain the weight. Do not eat the meat that you would on atkins. Yes, my cholestorol went down on atkins, but has gone back up some since then.

The Atkins Diet is not a healthy diet. It wreaks havoc with your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, so stopping the diet will almost certainly drop your total cholesterol and your blood pressure. Those are good things. The bad thing is you'll gain back any weight you lost if you don't eat properly and get at least some exercise. You may want to pick up a copy of The Abs Diet. It's a common-sense approach to eating and weight loss that doesn't require you to cut out entire food groups, doesn't involve calorie counting, and doesn't revolve around complicated recipes with exotic ingredients. Best of all, it's 100% safe and your chances of keeping the weight off on this diet are EXCELLENT. It's worth checking out...

What would happen if you were on any diet and go off of it? You gain the weight back. The only way one can successfully change their weight issue is to change their way of eating. Going on Atkins or any program for that matter and lose weight only to go back to your old ways is spinning your wheels. Plus your really harming your body. You will become heavier than before.
Sorry but I had to edit this when I read the post above me. There is nothing unhealthy about the Atkins way of eating.
There isn't a diet on earth that has taken more crap than Dr Atkins and his low carb diet. Even the Grapefruit diet, for god's sake, got more good press.
There is nothing "hoaxy" about reducing carbohydrates in your diet. Diabetes is a huge epidemic and the body basically just gives up on providing gobs and gobs of insulin to convert the average person's daily carbo feast into useable energy. I mean the food pyramid that was JUST recently tossed out wanted you to have ELEVEN servings of bread! In one day! Who does that benefit? Grain growers, maybe.
If the average person's breakfast is toast, eggs and bacon, why would eliminating the toast be "dangerous?" If the average person has a sandwich of turkey, swiss and some soup for lunch, what is "unhealthy" about not having the bread? If you have chicken, potato and veggies for dinner, why is it not wise to skip the potato and double up on the veggy? There is no person on earth that can't survive without bread, without potatoes, without rice. ALL of the nutrients in these foods are found, in higher amounts, in other foods. Humans have no innate need for grains or sugar or potatoes or corn.
Low carb is NOT a high fat diet unless you choose high fat items consistantly. Low carb isn't even high protein unless you make it that way. Low carb is just low carb. People need to stop labeling this diet as harmful.
And to the poster below me. Yep I lost 50 pounds of water! And my husband lost 80! Geeeeesh we must be a balloon! I have been on Atkins for 2 1/2 years and happily eat and keep it off!

I've heard it's not a very safe diet, so your health may improve, you may put on some weight. But if you eat a healthy diet don't worry.

Your body will begin storing the water it needs for processing carbohydrates. Stored water was the weight you "lost". But you will probably get healthier.
