The research I have done says that Karl Marx did not quote this as stated above.....that "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." is actually a Chinese proverb and that Karl Marx said "Sell a man a fish, and he can eat for a day, teach a man to fish, and you lose a great business opportunity." I've also found slight references to the Communist Manifesto being where this quote is found.....Otherwise, it does seem a bit difficult to find an exact source for this quote. Good Luck!!

Everyone else is pretty much correct on this one, but it is not from the Bible.
However, there is a joke variant: Give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach him to fish and you won't get any more meaningful work out of him.

It means, that sometimes when we think we're helping people by giving money, charity etc. we're actually not helping them, but making them dependent on us. If we teach them how to help themselves they will grow independent.
