Maybe you could go to a library and find newspaper articles from the day he was born and print up the most interesting one and frame it for him. Or if you can find his birth announcement. Although that would be really hard.

You can get wsome great "fill in the blank" books for grandparents. They can go through and answer all the questions about their life in it and then you get it back. It is a gift for both of you. You will have memories that no-one else has of his and he will probably enjoy doing it.
My dad is 82 and he has done a couple for us and we found out so many interesting things.
One of the ones we have is " A grandparents Book' by Flame tree publishing that you can get at Chapter for less than $10.

when my grandad was 80 we got him some books about the stuff he did back in his day, also make him up a picture collage of the whole family, he would love that put them all in a picture frame, date it back from when he was younger if you can get a hold of any pics of him and his family back then, also use some pics of you all and his kids and his grand-kids, he will be chuffed with that i think....find out what his hobbies are and get him some books about that hobby, make your own birthday card, that will be so special

A blown up, beautifully framed picture of the family, or him and his wife when they first got married, or a military picture of him in uniform (I'll be he's a VET, right?).
Just something you know would mean a great deal to him, that can hang over the mantle, over a desk, on a wall he sees or faces often, etc.

Get him a newspaper or something in that range in the year he was born. It would be great to have it framed after looking at it. I think it would be pretty unique. Good Luck :)

You are so lucky, my grandad died when he was 60. What does he like. Trains, cars, boats etc. If he's no hobbies buy some slippers or a nice coffee mug.sweets ashtray if he smokes.

If he is still in relatively good health you could try to sort out a way for him to tell his life story and see about getting a few published and distributed to members of his family. You could even get him to put his memoirs on a recording and either type them up yourself or get someone else to do them for him. I am sure recalling his life would put a twinkle in his eye.....

Just be with him. Thats the best gift you can get for him. Try and get as many as family memebrs along with relatives and be sure to get all his grand children. That would be the best gift for him.
