You need to know about 2000 Chinese characters (kanji). How? There is really no short cut. You just have to master 1 or 2 a day beginning with the easier ones. Later it will get a little easier because there are some patterns (like combinations) you can follow.

Learning the characters is a long process and can't be done in just a few months. It took me 3-4 years before I could read a newspaper.

I started the same way Japanese children do - I got an elementary school Kanji book and tried to learn a few each day. It is slow going at first but the more you learn the faster you can pick up new ones.

There are lot of people they will talk a lot.
There is nothing impossible. We have to try and learn.

Basically you are saying correct, the Japanese letters taken from Chinese are called Kanji. Though they are Chinese.

About your question.
How am I ever going to learn all the Chinese characters I need to be able to read Japanese?

Whatever your mother tongue is, how many years it took to be proficient in that language? then why try to learn foreign language in 30 or 90 days, or crush course. Crush course will only crush you.

Kanji is not difficult. It depends on the teacher's method for a student to learn. If you are really serious in learning only in that case send me e-mail otherwise please don't.

Have you ever seen a small baby, first that baby try to crawl, then by knees then try to stand by holding table, chairs, bed or legs of anyone and one day that small baby start walking. When a Baby never give up why don't you. Keep trying by mistake we learn.

Wish you good luck.

Konichiwa, konbanwa, Andy, lot of idiots answering this question, they would not understand the meaning of 'kanji' either. Chinese characters, mmmmm. I've lived in Japan for twenty years now and it is hopeless, I can read most people's names, but, I don't stand a cat's chance in hell with a newspaper. Maybe you should go to school. I never did, and that was my mistake. Ganbatte!!

That does not make any sense. You do not need to know Chinese characters to be able to read Chinese, you need to know JAPANESE characters.

The Japanese do not use Chinese characters. they have 3 "alphabets" of their own - katagana, hirogana, and Kanji. Since I currently live in Japan, I can tell you that Kanji is the one most used on road signs and restaurants - start with that one.
