For a desktop or tower, you simply OPEN the case, and you find the memory slots. That's easy! These memory slots are about 5 inches long. Your computer has 2, 3 or 4 slots. They usually have ONE card in one of the slots. They just SNAP IN. (Just remove the power cord before opening the case).
Visit http://www.coastmemory.com and lookup your computer. This will tell you how many slots that you have, what the MAXIMUM RAM will be and what came with.
At this point, I would aim to get the MAXIUMUM for your system. (or at least 512MB)

Primary Memory or RAM (Random Access Memory) is the processing space for a computer. Certain applications require high processing space, hence in such cases ram can be increased to accomplish the same.
If you are interested in upgrading the RAM on you PC and are not familiar with the internals of a PC hardware then it is strictly recommended that you take to tower to a store and get the memory upgrade done.
Prior to getting memory upgraded I would really appreciate if you could tell us the reason for doing that.
Our engineers on http://www.maincorporated.in/ will not only suggest you alternative solutions but also help you locate a vendor near you who can help you accomplish ram upgrade if necessary.

It would probably be best to take the whole computer to a computer shop and ask them about memory. If they're not busy, you can watch them as they open up your computer and insert a new memory module.
If you try to buy and install it yourself, you'll be asked a bunch of questions by the salesperson about what type, speed and size of RAM that you want. Then you'll have to go home and try to figure it all out by yourself. You don't need the headache.

You can buy memory chips at the store. Go to a good electronics store for your first time and tell them what you need or look up the specifications of your comp and match a chip to it yourself.
You leave the tower home, hon. Memory chips are easily installed with the computer turned OFF of course. And unplugged. You put the memory chip where it fits in at. It's one of the easiest pieces of hardware to install. Just make sure it's the right chip for your computer specifications or you won't be able to install it.

Within your Computer, on its motherboard there are Slots wherein the RAM Chips are seated.
Since your are getting the message that you mentioned and if you wish to increase the RAM then you have top see what kinds of RAM chips are compatible with your Motherboard and simply upgrade it with higher capacity or amount of same kind of RAM.
You can buy various kinds and capacities of Memory from any computer Store. Office Max, Staples, BestBuy, Circuit City, CompUSa etc all carry such Memory. They are not too cheap but the prices are manageable.
I suggest that you get this done by a Computer literate person.

Im a novice also, but you need to buy more RAM from an electronics store and have it installed into your tower. It will make the computer run alot faster.
You can install it yourself if you know how, it just slides into a slot inside the tower.
I have to have someone do mine, I'm too afraid to try it myself for fear of screwing something up!

Ram comes in what are known as sticks and vary in size (megabytes). You need to purchase compatible Ram to what you have as long as there are slots available in your computer (most common DDR)
It is easy to install. If you run Windows XP the minimum amount of RAM is 556 megabytes but more will help speed up your computer.
You have to do regular maintenance like cleaning up the junk files, defragment your disk, run scan for virus and run whatever programme you use to get rid of spyware

Earl - tell you what, take it to a computer store. Tell them to install more memory. That's all you have to do.
Memory comes in many varieties: DDR, SDRAM etc.. They come in many capacities, any where from 256 to 2 Gigabytes.
More memory, more money of course.
They also come in various shapes and sizes. Technician will open your computer, look at your main board and tell you what kind to install. He will choose the right one.
Some configure themselves automatically. Some, you have to make adjustments in BIOS. You may not know how to "tell" the computer that you have more memory.
So, stay away from all the technical gobbledy-**** and just let the experts do it for you. You will be paying couple of extra bucks for that, so what? No headaches, right?

if you bought your pc new there should be in your owners manual a diagram of the interior of the motherboard with the description of all parts.if you dont have this you can go to crucial.com they make memory and they have a test to see what your pc has in it and make recomendations for your machine.you can see the interior of and see all of the parts by going to staples, office depot or anyplace that sells computers or parts they will be more than happy to show you, this is all stuff you can see on the internet but if you see it up close you can get a feel for it,then go into the internet to explore.also it is VERY helpfull to go to the store and read pc magazines like pc world,CPU,etc.they have lots of good info for users of all levals.
