Yes the practice was known as SATI. First young girls used to get married to old landlords / rich people. The marriage used to last only a few years bcoz after that, that old fellow would die. The society then forced those girls to jump in the pyre so as to protect them from the society. In the sense that they will be exploited by other men, men from their own family. It was stopped due to the forward looking (atleast according to those times and circumstances) Raja Ram Mohan Roy and the British. A terrible practice i must say. At least i think so.
But now there is none of it. Except an occasional case in the most backward and rural areas. The women in India are beginning to get even an equal share in property (which was not so earlier), an equal share in all matters of the house etc. Besides in the urban areas most of them work now and all are well educated and know their rights.
It is still a mans world but women are catching up.

Its true women are burnt on husbands funeral pyre. The British Government had abolished such things in India. Those things are a thing of past.
Today Indian women can file any number of wrong / false cases on their husband and take away their property. She can also put the husband behind the jail without any reason. Thats what today Indian legal system is about and today Indian women are all about.
Indian women can be said to be the worst criminals of the world.

This is indeed in Indian history. This happened during Muslim invasion. When the husbands died in war, their women were exploited by the foreigners. So to aviod that women jumped into the pyre of their husband by choice.
Example : The beautiful Queen Padmini committed "Jowhar" along with other ladies of the palace after hearing the news of the death of their husbands in war to maintain their chastity.
Later on it became a practice " Sati " to do so even in untimely deaths. Thus it gradually became a tradition prevalent in Rajasthan.Child marriages also became a custom then.
But now all such practices have been abolished in free & independent India..

Don't believe everything you read. Be critical and open-minded. The practice has been banned a long time ago. And women were not burned. They chose to burn themselves on their husbands' pyres

It was called sutti and it was one of many bizarre rituals including self mutilation that Indians practiced until the British put a stop to it.
