There is some emulsion or masonary paint painted directly onto unsealed Sandstone which I want to remove. It will chip off but I don't want to damage the stone behind. I think that solvent may make the paint bleed into the stones pores so would prefer to remove it with another [easy] method.

The best way to do this is scrape of the top layer of paint using a scraper then rub the rest of with a natural grinding stone, this will get it out without markin the stone.

Sandstone is soft and porous. Any liquid or emulsion will wet the stone and might push the paint further into the stone. Scrape the paint off with a masonry chisel, or use a grinding stone to abrade the stain. It won't hurt the stone.

Hire a pressure washer from your local DIY store and blast the paint off with water.
