RE :I want to take my new car abroad for 12 months, how do I get cheap car insurance?
I have a new car (well used new car) that I want to take to Germany for 12 months. One insurance company quoted me £8,000! What are the best companies to get a quote from? Either that allow this under the policy, or will charge a reasonable fee for a green card on top of the normal insurance policy.

Most companies will only insure you for 90 days, I certainly wouldn't pay £8000 for car insurance, you could buy a few cars for that in Germany.
In fact that is probably your best bet, buy a nice cheap little runner in Germany, and get insured their, will probably cost you a fraction of what it does here. As this country rips you off any which way they can.
All the best.

Most countries require you to re-register your car if you stay more than 6 months but I don't know about Germany specifically. In any case you'll be far cheaper getting German car insurance. If you do this you should also ask your current insurer if they'll maintain your NCD while you're away.

Contact insurance ombudsman. In Ireland that's IRISH INSURANCE FEDERATION.
I went to local broker and got a quote of 3000 euros. A friend recommended Irish insurance fed and when I contacted them they told me to return to broker and ask for 3 quotes to be sent to them(I.I.F).
When I mentioned I.I.F to broker he immediately went to computer and came up with a quote of 1500 euros.
As soon as I mentioned the big boys he cut down on his commission and gave me a realistic quote.
I reckon they give the higher prices and leave us in the dark about cheaper quotes so as to gain more money for themselves. Plonkers.
Good luck with searching and hope you get as cheap as you can otherwise sell up and buy car over there.

it might not be that easy as you are not over there for a holliday so your car might have to be changed to there spec. lots of strange laws in germany. is buying a second hand car over there not a option? if you or partner are in the army im sure they have something in place for this. my friend went over to germany to work and scraped his uk car as it was to much hastle and got a german one instead.
