Even on administrative stuff you can use your first initial - then Middle name.

John Edward Smith (on legal documents this must be written out)

J. Edward Smith. aka ED.

Nothing illegal about wanting to go by your middle name as long as when writing on legal documents - bank drafts ect.. you use your legal name.

good luck.

It is not illegal to

In friendly interactions you can use any name: first, middle, nickname. It's whatever YOU prefer to be called.

On business transactions you usually use a middle initial or the full middle name.

sure you can, my husband does. Any thing in speech or unofficial stuff is fine but he does always use his first name in official things like at banks, or anything to do with the government.

You can use any name you want in all aspects of your life, except for legal documents that require your full name.
