Cats can have different kinds of coats. I have a Norwegian Forest cat wannabe and he has a double coat, long hair over the top and an undercoat of shorter denser hair underneath that. A brush just does not get at this "undercoat" so I also use a comb on him. He will not let me pull at mats that form in this undercoat and sometimes he has to go to the vet's so they can use clippers on him to get the mats out.

I have a 22 yr old cat who is severely arthritic and no longer grooms herself. She goes every month or six weeks to a groomer for a combout and bath.

So, try some combing along with the brushing and use the vet if you can't release the mats yourself. Do not bathe the cat before you have dealt with the mats as bathing will just make them worse. I have heard that some people use cornstarch or peanut butter to help release a mat.

All of the cats I have seen with clumps or mats on its back were either too old or too large to be able to groom themselves any longer. Not much you can do about his age, but if he is over weight, put him on a diet. Brush him more often, and perhaps use a conditioning spray.

In my experience when a cats fur is matted it usually means the cat doesn't clean his/her self enough, or its hair is to thick for it to clean itself properly. You might want to try to cut the clumps out and bath the cat with a mild shampoo, then brush the cat dry.
