If a couple is in there late 20's then they may be pretty well established in the basic home furnishings. Check where they are registered at, and see what they are asking for or what they need. Either pick up a registered gift, give a gift certificate, or go with standard cash (gotta pay that wedding off somehow). Anything you give will be much appreciated, it's really the thought that counts.

If you can get a Visa/Mastercard/American Express gift card that does not have too many limitations on it, that's always useful (but watch out for all that small print!).
If they're still in the early-to-mid apartment stage or "new homeowner" phase, consider getting one of those nice combination "starter toolboxes"---we have a great kit made by Black and Decker (moderators---this is NOT a commercial plug).
Ours is a little bigger than a briefcase, has a rechargeable power screwdriver, a whole bunch of driver heads, chisels, bits, wrench heads, square, mini-level, pliers, hammer.....The whole thing cost us less than $60 when we got it a few years ago (I'd guess maybe $75 or less, now), and it will cover practically every basic tool need EXCEPT sawing. Absolutely great for taking care of a lot of basic house and car repair stuff.
If they drink alcohol, consider getting them a few small (like the 375 mL) bottles of premium liqueurs, such as Benedictine, a really fine Amaretto, an excellent brandy, Drambuie, etc., in a decorative basket.

A picture frame with their names engraved on it, or a monetary gift is nice.
Did the couple register anywhere? Usually it is best to go from a gift registry so you don't get them something they do not want or that they already have.

A gift certificate for a day trip. Something the couple hasn't done before. It will strengthen their bond.

Gift cards or money. That way they can get what they need. At that age they probably have all the necessities.

What do they like to do? If they travel, something like a luggage set or camping stuff if they like the outdoors. They probably have stuff like toaster ovens. Are they listed? You can check where they're listed for crystal or china or something they say that they need.

As young as they are they probaby have much of nothing, unless they are wealthy to begin with. If so, then something such as a keepsake, if not then money. They will be able to get what they need by themselves. I personally don't like people to shop for me.
