1948 Buick, straight 8 engine, 6 volt battery. Crawl under it. See where the dynaflow transmission bolts to the motor" Look to the left, you will find the starter. It has the big wire coming to the top of it.

I'm not sure. I think it was on the motor. However if you are talking about the starter switch, then it probably was under the clutch pedal, if it had a clutch or a button on the dash.
Some older cars had them even was rigged up, on some early automatics, on the steering column. You would have to push the shift lever just a little past the park indicator to get it started. The actually starter mechanism itself in most cases were more than likely located some where on the motor or tranny.

As you look at the car it should be on your left hand side. Also look for the + battery lead and follow it to the starter.

Yeah, check the full circumference of the flywheel. That's got to get you close.
