What word processor are you comparing Word to?
Well, offhand, I'd say that it is the most popular Windows program, so it's easier to get help with using it. Since you have to pay for it, you are entitled to technical support.
I can't remember if OpenOffice supports ALL of the Word file formats, so that might also be and advantage of Word. Of course, even if OpenOffice didn't, there's little chance of you needing to open an old Word file.
I think Word is also easier to set up if you're using multi-language extensions. I know that my brother uses the English version of Word for reading/writing letters in Japanese.
Otherwise, go get OpenOffice. :)

It is widely used, but only understands Word files. Other word processing programs are far more flexible, WordPerfect for one.
There are definitely better choices around than Microsoft Word.

You get the advantage of paying for it when you can get the same thing for free with OpenOffice.org. Plus it has loads of features they you will never need.

(1) You have access to spellcheck and can find out that the word is actually 'four' in this instance.
For advantages (2) (3) and (4), please refer back to advantage (1)

its generally more compatible with other computer systems so generally you can transfer info from and to most computers quite easily. There are most probably much better software packages around but ppl keep using it because that is what they are used to.
