Tinnitus just takes up residence in some of us as we get older, and it takes several forms. In my case it is a constant whistle in one ear like a radio tuning signal. There are physical aids, such as a device to introduce "white noise" into your ears, but I would recommend trying to follow these rules:
1. Try not to think about it too much, and concentrate on what else is going on around you and in your life.
2. Stay relaxed and if necessary do regular relaxation exercises to miminise your levels of stress.
3. Reduce your frequency and amount of alcohol intake.
I have found that by following this regime I am far less troubled by tinnitus than I used to be.
Hope it helps you.

Ringing in the ears or tinnitus can have many causes such as fluid build up in the ear, infection and/or medication. Aspirin and NSAIDS such as Advil, Aleve and Naproxen and also trauma to the ear. If it is persistant you should see a doctor to find the cause and get proper treatment.

If you have continuous ringing in your ear, you need to see a neoroligist immediately. This can be a sign of a very real and life threatning disease. Anything from Multiple sclerosis to Vasculitis. I had ringing in my ears for years before I had a multiple sclerosis attack that paralised me for 2 years. I reiterate, THIS COULD BE A SIGN OF A VERY REAL DISEASE. GET SEEN BY A DOCTOR Asap.

The Aspirin Alternative by Dr Michael Loes discusses tinnitis and some interesting ideas on how to deal with it. Some references suggest that Gingko biloba may help.
Good luck!
