Jose is wrong, the chineses can't pronounce the R, the japaneses can't pronounce the L!!! So Irene would be: イレンネ Irenne.

If it is the name of Greek goddess, we call her”イレーネ” (irehne)
If it is an English name, maybe "アイリーン"(airiin)?
Also there was a work of art named Irene Cahen by Renoir, we call her"イレーヌ・カーン"(irehnu kahn)

Mr.Trucknit is so right! the pronounce of "r" in japanese sounds like "t" in city (smth between t and r. They do not have L!)

The katakana symbols Mr Trucknit wrote are right, but they sound like -y- in 'any', -re- in 'red' and -nne- in 'nest'. I guess you want it to sound like normal english pronounced "irene" (like eye-reen), right ?!

So maybe you should write アイリ―ン , so you pronounce like in in english. The purpose of katakana is to imitate the sound, not the letters as we see them written.

Irene comes from "irini" which means 'peace' in greek so why not using the kanji for 'peace'? (ok, just an idea!)

That's easy you don't translate names.
If there are names that seem to be translations of foraign names, it's just because that, long ago, people used those names and they adapted to be easly pronounced by the locals.
Or maibe "ILENE", because asians can't pronounce the R

"Ai rene" or "Ai line"? Ai in Japanese (and also Chinese) mean love. I think Airene is a beautifull name.
