The invoice is what the dealer paid. MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) is what they are suggested to sell it to YOU for. MSRP is invoice plus profit.

Difference Between Msrp And Invoice

Invoice price is what the dealer actually pays for the car. MSRP is the manufacturer's suggested retail price. The MSRP is inflated to about 25-40% of the invoice price, depending on the make and model of car.

MSRP is the price shown on the Monroney, or Window Sticker, and is established by the vehicle's manufacturer. The Invoice is the amount paid by the dealer. However, vehicle invoices themselves normally carry a disclaimer something along the lines of, "this invoice may not reflect the dealer's ultimate cost." This is because there are other monies that often come to the dealer in the form of floorplan interest credits, advertising credits, holdback amounts (for ex. 3% on GM vehicles), and sometimes other dealer incentives for meeting a certain sales level, etc.

MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price) is the price the manufacturer considers to be a fair price for an item. Invoice is what the manufacturer sells the item for to a retailer. A retailer can sell the item for any price that he wants, as long as someone will pay that price. The difference between the price the retailer pays, and the price the customer pays is the gross profit. Out of this gross profit, the retailer pays for the cost of the store (overhead), employee's pay and taxes. After all the costs are taken out, the remainder is the net profit on the sale. Another answer seems to imply that by making a profit the retailer is "screwing" the customer. I have one question for people who feel that way. Do YOU work for free? Why should someone risk his money to start a business, if he is not going to make a profit?
