I've noticed they seem to be heavier on the brakes (for no reason, much of the time) when there are more people standing, or when you are trying to get off the bus with heavy shopping!

Or, to put it another way, are some bus drivers jerks?

m1kbee........Sometimes, you don't give us 'clowns' a chance to sit down before you speed off from the stop!

I think it's like to speed through their route, and heavy breaking is just a biproduct of bad driving!

As a trained bus driver, I feel that I must say something, first they are not trained to play passenger pin ball, they are trained very highly I may add to a high standard, its only when they have been driving for years that they go a bit mad, some drivers do break aggressively( there is no need to under any circumstances)others cant help it maybe the bus needs more maintenance,There is one thing though not many can negotiate there way round London's narrow streets, also do you know the difference between a REQUEST STOP and a COMPULSORY STOP, it is A RED LOGO WITH AWHITE BACK GROUND IS COMPULSORY a WHITE LOGO WITH RED BACKGROUND IS REQUEST, always put your hand out at right Angles from your body in good time for the driver to see you, that way passengers have a smooth ride.

As a bus driver I can answer this one.
Firstly, did any of you clowns bother to read the notice that says "please remain seated whilst the vehicle is in motion."?
Next, the brakes on all buses differ therefore it can take a trip before you get used to what they are going to do. Especially on older vehicles where they have been replaced and are suddenly very sharp/ no abs or ebd.
Try ringing the bell in plenty of time. I find at least 30% of passengers leave it till as late as possible and then the driver has to slam the brakes on for that idiots stop or get moaned and for stopping 500yrds down the road.
On that note, try ringing the bell. When you sneak up and stand right behind the driver he/she may not hear or see you and would then have to apply the brakes with more force than usual when you suddenly shout "I wanted that stop!" and scare the life out of the driver.
Finally, There are some drivers out there who are just planely rubbish. Too busy trying to keep on time than have any consideration for their passengers or really don't care. Best thing you can do about these drivers is complain to the company.
Take down the route number, time and place (and if possible the fleet number of the bus) and go and tell the inspectors as much detail of your complaint as you can.
Those people who give this answer a thumbs down are the idiot passengers who do all of the above. Try helping the driver out for a change instead of being nobs.

Yes! And tube drivers too - very dangerous when you're packed in like sardines, they build up a head of speed in the tunnels then brake very late and fast, and corner at speeds that would send an F1 car green with envy ;-) to send everyone flying. I'm convinced this is done deliberately.
Whether bus drivers do it to be jerks though I dunno as I tend to avoid buses, i'm not really sure how deliberately tube drivers do it, but it does seem to be more noticeable when the trains are packed! (Perhaps they have a secret society).

I agree, and they pull off faster if you are struggling to get into a seat. I take a pram onto the bus and most of the time the driver waits for me to get the brakes on etc, but you do get the odd one who pulls off fast and the pram shoots forward and I have to struggle to get it back and put the brakes on an then get into the folding seat without falling on my a**e!!
Sometimes I pray for people to queue behind me at the bus stop as this normally gives me time to get the pram sorted

To the guy who said about Tube braking - the heaviest braking is on the Automatic lines (victoria and central) - humans tend to err on the side of caution and will brake earlier then the computer controled trains on those lines

It does seem that way but then it might just be that when the bus is crowded and more people are standing, the streets are also more crowded and traffic is not running as smoothly.

Not some - ALL.
I think it's part of their training to develop a touch like an elephant.
