We are getting married in March and will have just bought our first house (which needs renovating). Cash is going to be tight so I need some imaginitive reception ideas for 80 guests. Garden is too small for marquee.

You should ask for vouchers for either a building centre that has a garden centre in it too, it's easier than asking for cash if you need money to renovate your house. though your close friends and relatives wont mind giving you money.

Do you have a friend who has a bigger garden than you and are willing to lend you? Otherwise a hall or even a restaurant that is inexpensive could be hired. You can negotiate with the restaurant a set menu within your budget. My daughter works in a lovely country pub with a garden where they have weddings and are not expensive.

If you dont want a full on sit down meal just have drinks and snacks. I had that at my first wedding and it worked really well. Also a morning wedding is cheaper as people dont drink so much as in the evening. You could have a cash bar and just supply a certain amount of wine and a glass of champagne for the toasts.

If you have a granny or relative/friend who can make cakes it will save you a lot on your wedding cake. For decor you can be imaginative and not have too many fowers if you have modern flower arrangements with twisted twigs and leaves, simple but effective. Again you can rope artistic friends in to do that for you.

If you are on a really tight budget borrow a wedding dress or hire one or get someone to make one for you.

Shop around for a photographer and have friends take photos as well. Cut down on table favours, a waste of money in my opinion, nobody really wants to keep that little keyring or bag or sugared sweets.

That's all I can think of. I am getting married in a month's time (75 people) and have implemented lots of these things and we have managed to save quite a bit. Will let you know how it went!

We went to a wedding where the reception was at a hall that had been hired for a small fee, the people who got married asked everyone to bring their own favourite drink and some food. Everyone knew the situation they were in so nobody moaned. You just need to be a bit organised and delegate a bit about what you want to ask people to bring.

The best value for money is to find a pub with a function room and they are usually more then happy to offer the venue for free if they can provide a buffet. I would think around £5 a head and they then get the profit from the bar too.

Local Social Club - Hire the function room, buy your own table cloths, place a bottle of your fav wine (or champers) in the middle of the rables, blow up some balloons and dot them around the function room and then have a good time.

I did that for my wedding reception and it turned out great, it makes the function room a totally different place to be

Why dont you hire a hall and just have a party with a DJ and buffet instead of a meal?
You could ask family and close friends for a meal during the day then have the party for everyone else at night.

Have the person sending the invitations make a note about your renovation plans and suggest gift cards to big name building supply stores. Rent a hall at the fair grounds or somewhere, potluck buffet, music, etc.

there are always.local social clubs, cricket clubs, or even just a dance hall or nightclub.
Ive been to wedding receptions that were in the function room of a nearby pub, they can give you great deals and can even help with food for a bit extra or do it urself.

Try having the wedding at a relatives house or outside in a park

Some social clubs will let you have the room for free because they know they are going to make on the bar. Ask your family and friends to chip in by helping to make the buffet.....

rebting a space, such as a pavilion in your town park or the fire hall may be the cheapest way to go...then have it catered. it's cheaper to do just appetizers and light drinking instead of a whole meal if the timing of your wedding allows for that.
