You may need to see a doctor. Bad smell is pus you can go in sock any time.
Remove the insert cut it off if it cannot be taken out. Have the installer take it out they have cutting tools.
Clean it good, apply anti-septic cream.
If pierced remove the item clean it and keep it in safe place.
Apply anti-septic to clean tooth pick(wooden) and insert it in the hole to keep open and clean. Few time a day apply anti-septic, do not remove the tooth pick but slide it back and forth. Change it as needed. Once a day.
Logic:
Wood tends to breed, so at least one type of bacteria will not be able to survive.
Some people are allergic to Mattel used in the pierced item, once the infection is gone try some other piece.
Try using pure silver or 14 kart or batter gold insert.
Some may require a purity of 22- 24 kart gold(not easy to find in USA).
Make sure you apply anti-septic at new insertion, and every day, for a month or so, you have to keep it clean and watch it every day for any sings of re-occurring infection.
Some just cannot use any thing. You may be one of them, discontinue the use after trying few other items made of surgical steel, platinum or palladium........

If its pierced, take out the piercing (even if this means that it will close) and clean it out with Hydrogen Peroxide, if it is not cleaned properly, it will get infected.. and if ye are using a piercing, make certain that it is cleaned even if it was bought in a package bc the places those rings have been are contaminated, so soak it in rubbing alcohol prior to insertion, and make certain that ye let it dry completely bc rubbing alcohol will act like an acidic compound if mixed with Hydogen Peroxide... If this problem persists, see yer primary care physician..
