It is niether of both.

The word Hindu does not appear anywhere in the Vedas, Upnishads, Shrutis etc.

It is foriegn word given by the invaders to the people living nearby Sindhu river. Since the invaders langauage did not correspond to the sound of alphabet 'S' , they started pronouncing it as the Hindus.

The real religion was vedantik or Sanatan which has been forbidden and forgotten

It is more of a way of living i.e. civilisation rather than a religion

Thus all the people living in India may be coined as Hindus basing on geographical nomenclature.

The teachings of Vedas remarkably resembles and confirms the teachings of Holy Quran.

You must learn them to become a true sanatani..

Hinduism (Sanskrit: हिन्दू धर्म, Hindū Dharma, also known as सनातन धर्म, Sanātana Dharma and वैदिक धर्म, Vaidika Dharma ) is a set of religious traditions that originated mainly in the Indian subcontinent. It is the oldest organized religion of all the major religions of this world. It is not a single well-defined religion, in the sense that it consists of several schools of thought and traditions. Sometimes it's termed as a culture rather than a Religion but it has both cultural and spiritual aspects in it. Hinduism encompasses many religious rituals that widely vary in practice, as well as many diverse sects and philosophies. The majority of contemporary Hindus follow the Vedanta philosophy, a monotheistic philosophy, and believe in a cosmic spirit called Brahman, that is worshiped in many forms such as Vishnu, Shiva or Shakti.

Hinduism is the third largest religion in the world, with approximately 1 billion adherents (2005 figure), of whom approximately 890 million live in India.[1]It is also considered to be the oldest living religious tradition in the world [2][3] [4]Unlike many other religions, Hinduism has no main founder.[5][6] While the adherents do not stick to a particular religious scripture, they regard the Vedas (each of which are divided into Samhita, Brahmana, Aranyaka and Upanishad) as the scripture; other scriptures followed include the eighteen Puranas, and the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, which are known as Itihasas. The Bhagavad Gita, part of the Mahabharata, is a widely studied teaching.

Hinduism is a religion. It's part of civilization but not civilization itself because civilization also covers a lot of others like science, art, trading, etc.
