Without having a special tool

Yes you can but as everyone else has said watch your fingers. Put the knife edge under the edge of the removable back and use a twisting action. Do NOT poke the end of the knife under as it will not get a grip and slip out. This is where the damage to self and watch happens.
Batteries are very cheap to buy, especially if you have a POUNDLAND near by. You can get a card of 40, yes 40 batteries covering 6 different sizes for a £1.00.

A Jewellers will charge about a fiver to do the job
Good luck

A sharp instrument should work, however, I had a watch that I could not put the back on again without a special tool. Ended up going to a watch repair shop anyway.

Of course it is. Some very expensive watches need a speical tool but most watches dont. all you need is a set of jewellers screwdrivers. If you have screws at the back of the watch undo them. If not just prize the back off with a flat ended jewellers screwdriver. you can pick these screwdrivers up for cheap at tool shops, or some where like halfords. cheap and nasty £1 shops also sell them but the quality is poor.

Yes, but some watches have screw backs that need a tool for the job as you are aware, look for a small indention in the lip of the back plate, this is where you can leaver it open. however most watch sellers will insert a new battery for you, for a fee of cause!

do you think that is the reason it was given to charity??? typical when i worked in a charity shop we had a nice man who came around and did batteries for us, but the pendant being a so called designer one is probably one of those that HAS to be sent back to the manufacturer makes things more difficult, do you have a local market near by? have a look if there is a battery seller there? they seem to be able to open anything!! lol good luck!

It is possible but the problem with Knives And Screwdrivers is you many damage the watch or yourself. Most jewellers will do it for a couple of quid.

Hi!
It is possible, but I would suggest taking it to a jewellers to have it done as there are many smaller parts behind the back that can get damaged if you don't know what you are doing.
Hope this helps!

Yes, you can by using a small knife blade (but with care). If it is a screw back you can use a pair of large tweezers, by spreading them out to the correct width to reach the slots. Needle nosed pliers can also be used.

Yes, use a pen-knife. There will be a notch to take the blade somewhere on the edge of the back cover.

Yes, I open mine with a knife. I wouldn't recommend this method with an expensive watch, as it could easily get scratched.
