Hi!

We opened a small carton of Heavy Whipping Cream around September 1st... today is the 20th. I want to throw it away, but my husband says it is still good and does not spoil as fast as milk?

Is he right? Is the Heavy Whipping Cream still good?

Thanks...
T.

P.S. - The reason why this is an issue is because there is no expiration date on the carton.

Hi Nanny,

It wasn't me who bought it... I am an expiration date freak. The day after it expires, it is in my trash can. However, my husband says I waste food by doing that and many times, the expiration date is more for the store's use, and that most food is still good for a week or two after that.

Haha...that sounds like the exact type of little argument my husband and I would have...let's see. A-hah! Finally...I searched forever for this link! It looks like you are right. It is probably not good to drink anymore.

The following storage times are guidelines for maintaining the quality of milk and cream in the refrigerator at home after purchase: Fresh milk -- 5 days; buttermilk -- 10-30 days; condensed or evaporated milk -- opened 4-5 days; half and half, light cream, and heavy cream -- 10 days; sour cream -- 2-4 weeks.

This should have answered your question. I hope so!

If it smells good and tastes good, it IS good. Whipped cream should last a few days in the frig if it
doesn't break down.

You should be able to tell by taste and smell - though that seems like a long time. Why would you have bought a dairy product without knowing the expiration date? That's odd.

does it smell bad?

if so, trash it. if not, use it!

the fat does tend to preserve the cream, especially since we have refrigeration now!
