a question for theists.

why create an extra step in the history of the universe which involves the creation of a god? why not just concentrate on the 'real' story of how the universe began?

God was not created - He always was, is now, and always will be. No extra step. God is infinite and eternal.

If the universe can just come from nothing, then so can a God! And since we can choose the origin, it's much more fun to imagine a God, rather than an endless cycle of spontaneous creation and destruction.

How sure are you that the universe actually ever began?

It seems more like a mental exercise if you actually think about it.

You can't prove that any of it really exists. All of it is pictured in the mind of the observer and there is no way to prove that it exists external to the thought that thinks that it sees it.

So your idea that it exists at all is only speculation on your part.

God did not just come from nothing. Before there was anything . There was God.

John1-5
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not."

This is because the history of God is the research of religious people while the history of the universe is the research of scientists. Avoid mixing them up.
A person leaning more to science will believe the universe.
Another person leaning more to religion will believe God.

The reason why we can`t have come from nothing is because it`s more comfortable to believe in a god. I mean who cares about evidence!

Almighty God is a 'spiritual' being. The universe is mostly rock, substantial. A huge difference. And not even comparable.
