I'm not sure Islamist is actually a real term. Islam is the religion and a Muslim is the term used to describe those who follow the religion. In the same way that Judaism is the religion and Jew is somebody who follows Judaism.

I live in France. A few days ago, a french Muslim leader talked about what pope ben16 said. The muslim leader said that it was a pity that that pope can't even distinguish Islam from islamism.
- Islam = a monotheistic religion > Muslims;
- islamism = not a religion but a fanatical ideology > islamists.
Unfortunately, both words are very similar, so most of people mistake them.
It is often difficult to easily distinguish fanatics from balanced believers, in any kind of religious & spiritual movement.

A Muslim is a member of the Islamic faith.
Islamism is used to describe political ideologies expressed in the language of Islam. Islamism is the new term for Islamic Fundamentalism, which was criticized (as a term) for borrowing from the Western experience of Christian Fundamentalism.

Muslims believe in God they call Allah, obey and follow him and submit or surrender themselves totally to his will.
In practice Muslims fulfill their pillars of faith.
The Islamists are the radical muslims who believe that they can change the world for Allah if they use Islam as their means of espousing and executing terrorism. Fundamentalism is their issue but it is actually radicalism because fundamentalism bears the tenet of peace which their Prophet Muhammed preaches.

A Muslims is one who has surrendered to God's will in Islam. It is the only correct word for describing a true follower of Islam.
Islamist is a made up word... made up probably by ignorant western media outlets. It's generally considered an offensive word.
