I did see a guide at Chapter's for colour mixing but am looking for something more technical.

Modern acrylics are nearly as good as oil paints, without the smell, and they dry much quicker.
Generally you use them like oil paints, (only mix with water instead of medium/turpentine) though they are less opaque.
When mixing your colours, which is no problem as long as they are all water based, you have to keep in mind that they don't darken as much as oil paints when they dry.
Since the drying process is so fast, you can mix a small amount of your colour to see what it will look like, on a piece of flat glass, and then hold it over the background it is meant to cover/sit beside. To make absolutely sure of your colour being the same as on your glass, you'd have to paint a dark background first with white, as I said, acrylics are more transparent, the more water you put in, the less opaque they get.
Mess around, make you own experiences, that's the only real way to learn.
Good luck and lots of fun!
Oh, and you can remove acrylic easily from any non-absorbent surface with hot water.

I recommend mixing different colors and see what you can get from them. After a while you'll get a feel for what colors will do what.

Mixing with a little water is okay to thin it down a little, but it can get runny. I recommend using a product called medium. It comes in gloss or matte. What medium does is thin out your acrylic without changing the color. It's great stuff!

Happy painting!!

acrylics are oil based so mixing with water isn't good.
