Voltaire asked the pope Leo X for some relics to sanctify his chapel and the pope sent him the hairshirt of St Francis.

Cilice can mean both hairshirt and the metal belt.

Yes, since cilices used to be hairshirts.

He also had his own church built and lived with the Priest for that church and tried to control every aspect of it.
