The Big Bang theory depends mainly on the observation that the universe is gradually getting wider where all the particles depart from its center like flak in an explosion. Now who created the massive bomb itself in the first place??

The Big Bang created the Universe that we know today. The Big Bang was created when the universal cosmic egg exploded.

The Cycling Universe Theory states that the Universe has a limit, it will expand and die, as it cools down, then the remnants will all fall into a black hole. The black holes will all unite into one black hole containing all the matter in the universe. This condition is unstable and so it will explode in another Big Bang. It is a closed cycle and the universe creates and destroys itself in an unending cycle.

The steady state universe theory states that the particles in the universe will continue to expand at the rate of the Hubble Expansion toward infinity. As the universe expands it will cool, by the laws of entropy and so the universe will die flying off to parts unknown.

Both theories follow existing models and cannot be proven. They are equally valid, as I understand physics, so I don't know which one to pick. Maybe Steven Hawking has a better idea.

I don't know everything about the universe our knowledge is finite. Since there was no one around to investigate and observe the Big Bang and what happened before it we don't know what really happened. We are studying the universe and our larger telescopes are viewing some of the light left over from the Big Bang in an attempt to answer your question. Time travel is possible, but it involves a lot of physics and requires a super massive object that has to have existed at the point in time that you want to travel to. (Don't ask me the physics, I don't understand them, I am only a semi-know it all.) But, since that super massive object cannot have existed before the Big Bang or until a long time after the Big Bang then we cannot go back in time to that point. The Cosmic Egg has defused itself so it is no longer a super massive object so we can't use that.

I don't know exactly what made the Universe. I have some good ideas based on scientific and observable fact, but there are some things we don't know. The laws of physics break down inside a black hole, and anything can happen there, but it won't affect our universe. It can't because to reach our universe it would have to exceed the speed of light and that can't happen in our universe. If the cycling universe model holds then the universe could be recreated by something inside the huge black hole at the end of the universe, but again we can't know about that since for that information to reach us it would have to exceed the speed of light.

Science doesn’t know everything nor does it have an explanation for everything. However, I am more likely to believe in science then the supposed science of the bible. Or do you actually believe that the sun revolves around the Earth. We have visited Jupiter and observed its moons; we have been observing Jupiter since Galileo. But, when Galileo first observed the moons of Jupiter he proved that everything doesn’t revolve around the Earth and that the bible is in error. For that unspeakable crime he was imprisoned in his tower for the rest of his life, oh yea, the last pope pardoned him 400 years later, but I don’t think that Galileo cares anymore.

Every primitive culture has its own creation myths. The Hindi do, the Greeks did, the Norse did, and the Christians do. However, those are just myths. They were made to answer the big questions of life: What are we? Where did we come from? Why are we here? They were needed because there was no other information or explanation available. Now days we have outgrown the need for such myths, or at least the smart ones have. After the invention of the scientific method we learned things, but it suddenly didn’t give us all the knowledge in the Universe. The Greeks thought the ultimate indivisible particle of Universe was the atom. We know better now days, we know that there are particles that make up the atom, particles that make up these smaller particles and even smaller particles that made them. We are still looking for the smallest particles. If you don’t believe this then nuclear reactors don’t work and Chernobyl didn’t happen.

I believe in evolution because it explains things that happened. I see it in practice every day. God didn’t make dogs man tamed the wolf and made dogs. He changed their breeding and selected the traits that he wanted. He did the same with the horse. Or do you disbelieve in the dog and the horse? How do you explain the new breeds that have been created in the last 200 years? God didn’t make them, man did, and Noah didn’t have Irish Wolfhounds on his Ark. What about pygmies? They weren’t aboard the Ark and they surely didn’t descend from Adam and Eve. In the King James Version these people were white and didn’t have any genes for black or oriental people. Do you not believe in Japan or China? I know a lot of Veterans that would disagree with you on that. Do you think that all blacks should be slaves, because they can’t be people, they aren’t mentioned in the bible? In the King James version even the Egyptian Pharos were fair skinned.

Then God completely forgot about the dinosaurs, they aren’t mentioned in the bible. We have 1,000s of museums that have dinosaur exhibits, or do you think that they are all fake? How about malaria, cholera, small pox, rubella, and the common cold; do you believe in them? The bible doesn’t mention that Noah made germ cultures and carried them on the Ark. Some of those bacteria and viruses didn’t exist in the regions were the bible took place so they couldn’t have known about them. Also how did the plants survive, Noah didn’t carry Redwoods or Redwood seeds on board the Ark, because they were unknown until the 1600s. Or do you not believe in California’s Redwood Forest?

I was a true believer at one point, and I didn’t transform into an atheist until I understood a lot of science, in another words until I knew better. I was exposed to the concept of Occam's razor (Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam's_Razor). The simplest explanation is often the best. You can come up with some pretty complex theories to make all of the bible work, but they don’t hold together. The simplest theory is that the bible has some errors and misconeptions in it.

The bible was compiled in around 200 A.D. with pieces that were far older, like most of the Old Testament. The people of those times worked with the best information they had. The problem with most Christian religions is that they think the Bible is correct, VERBATIM. They forget that the Bible was written by man and only inspired by God. How can you explain how a television works to a civilization that barely understands iron? Steel was a far later invention. How do you explain complex cosmic theories of space time and black holes to people who thought that the Earth was flat and stars were just holes in the crystal sphere. Even if God knew what we know today he couldn’t have explained it in a fashion that medieval man (and earlier) could understand.

If the bible were written today then many things would be different, but after almost 2,000 years from now we would have enough knowledge to see all the errors in that work.

Also which bible are you talking about? Do you mean the Old Testament, the New Testament, the King James version, or some other version? What about the Book of Mormon, or the Gideon Bible? Do you think that the Baptists are heathen scum who are all going to hell? They do not believe that after the death of Jesus the Holy Ghost came and filled the apostles and caused them to speak in tongues. The bible clearly states that it happened; yet the group famous for their extensive bible study have arguments with the original text. Most of the people in the Middle East are dark skinned, but in the King James Version they were all made into white people. We know that is wrong. You only have to watch the coverage of the Iraq War to see that. Or do you not believe in Iraq?

The bible is an excellent resource. It is the foundation for all our laws, it teaches a good moral code, and provides an excellent example of how to live your life (Jesus). It is not a work of science we can see the errors. Nor is it the ultimate historical resource, all those pesky dinosaurs argue against that. This is why many scientists believe in the scientific method and their religion. They know that the works of their religions were only inspired by God and they know that the bible is meant to teach; law, a moral code, and how to live your life. It is not meant to explain anything else.

I was raised a Roman Catholic and I am glad about that. I honor the religion, the works of the Pope and a lot of other things, but I differ with organized religion on several points as I pointed out above. I agree with Martin Luther that the church should not sell the sexual favors of nuns or sell people written permission to sin just to raise money for a cathedral. Do you favor any of this? Did you even know it happened? And, have you every noticed that atheists seem to know more about your religion then you do? They may not quote the bible at you verbatim, but they know it, they know about the history of the church and they are willing to see the wrongs that have been done in the name of religion. It is the closed mined religious people that get me worried. When told about the terrorist attacks on 9-11-2001 an Afghani responded, “Why do you make such fuss about two buildings falling down?” This person was so primitive that he couldn’t conceive of a building more than a dozen stories tall. He couldn’t understand the huge numbers of people that died and the even greater number of people, who were affected by 9/11. To him a TV is a magic box with sound and moving pictures (if he had even seen one); he can’t even begin to explain how it works or even how the signals get from the station to the TV. He is ignorant and I shake my head but I have to forgive his ignorance. However, when you think about it he has about the same knowledge and understanding as the people who wrote the bible. So I have to shake my head and forgive their ignorance. What I can’t forgive is the ignorance of people like you who should know better!

No I don’t know exactly how the Universe was created, I can’t know and as I understand time and physics the knowledge is unobtainable. But, then people used to think that you couldn’t travel faster than the speed of sound, before that people thought that if you went in a car faster than 30 miles per hour your head could be broken off and before that people never thought they could move as fast as something like a horse.

Mankind learns, he evolves, he gets smarter and he gets better. The bible is frozen; it can’t evolve, change, or get better because the ignorant people won’t even admit that it might have some errors in it. The only questions that I have asked in this thesis have been rhetorical ones. Since you are a computer user I make a lot of assumptions on your behalf (like you are half-way intelligent). If I have made those assumptions in error then please forgive me. If I have offended you then please forgive me. I was only trying to show the problems with Christianity, as I said I honor the religion, and except for a faith in God I try to live like a good Christian. I guess I just too much, and knowledge is a dangerous thing because it can make you ask questions.

NOTE: I haven't studied Islam so I don't know your creation myths. I didn't even know you had any, but since Mohammed wrote the Koran around the time of Christ and in the same general region most of what I have said applies. I had to restrict myself to the Christian Religion because that is what I know.

fatsausag...: is right the creation of the Universe and the Earth took a lot longer than 7 days. The Christian response is "But, how long is a day to God?" Since God is Jesus and Jesus spent at least 30 years on Earth as a human, God very well does know how long a day is at least to anyone who is trying to read the bible.

nameena n: You suffer the same fallacy of most bible thumpers. You cannot prove a text is correct by quoting that text.

Olga: I have read about some of what you speak of, but then the Hindi religion believes that the universe is a lotus flower that has bloomed on Braham’s belly.

Megatron: forgot, or probably didn't know, about the Cyclic Universe Theory, come on I was reading about that 30 years ago.

Apeman: yes the Big Bang is a theory, so is Evolution, and for that matter so is the Theory of Creationism. But, I can point to proof outside of the bible for my theories, you can't.

just another kid: I am standing my ground and your response inspired me to add all these personal comments. What sounds immature to me is a belief in something that you can't prove: faith. But, I can still claim that your religious book is a good guide for a basis of our law, a moral code, and a way to live your life. I just don't believe that the Bible (or the religious book of your choice) is the end-all book and ultimate authority on everything. Even Wikipedia doesn't make that claim and covers a whole lot than your bible does. But, then how do you explain the Gospel of Judas? It was discovered recently, yet it hasn't been included in the Bible, and probably never will. If the bible was complete then it would have included his work, or have made some reference to it being wrong, but that subject has been neglected as well. Too bad your work isn’t a living work like the US Constitution or all of science is. I am not wed to the Big Bang theory; it is just the best one out there. If you can come up with a theory that has better proof (and again you can’t prove something is right by quoting it) then I will believe in that. Science is always questioning and exploring. When better theories are found science adapts. Once upon a time the best scientists thought the Atom was indivisible. Later the best scientists thought the Bohr Model was correct, and that has the electrons orbiting the nucleus like planets orbit a sun. But, in 8th grade I learned about Quantum Physics and now I understand that the electrons orbit it clouds of probability not on fixed paths. I also know, by the Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle that to locate the position of the electron is to change the position of that electron.

iam_an_el...: Arguing is not ineffective, it is how all scientific theories and principles are made. For a theory to be valid you have to PROVE it is, and you can't use your own theory to prove that your theory is right. But, that is how you prove your religious texts are all correct. Don't you see the error in that thinking? I am not trying to insult you I am asking you a question. But, you won't answer it because to do so will shake the foundation of your faith; too bad for your faith. If I find a principle that shakes my understanding of the world then I try to develop a theory that will explain the new information. We can't always do that. That's why Newtonian Physics and Quantum Physics don't agree on several basic issues. Once day we will find out why, and then that will improve our understanding. But, again your religious book is static and it can never be improved. THAT'S WHY IT DOESN'T WORK AND SCIENCE DOES!

ParadoX may be right. He has the same basis as the authors of your religious work and is every bit as valid as them. You can't prove that his words weren't inspired by the voice of God. After all the only reason for our existence may be so we can get drunk and see our religious icons the Pink Flying Elephants. However, I don't respect the words or visions of a drunk, they don't do anything good for society. I do respect the bible and similar works because they do help society.

If you're almighty God can be assumed to have existed forever, why do you assume that the matter and energy of the universe could not have existed forever? Why must it once have been created? If the fact that it exists means that it had to be created, then the same is true of God.

The Big Bang Theory states that all matter and energy we can now witness were once confined within a very small area. It says nothing at all about what it was like before that point. It does NOT say that it was all created then.

No one did. The current theory is that the universe originated from a singularity. Before that the mathematics break down, so it's anyone's guess (emphasis on "guess").

There is no evidence that the universe was organized by any kind of intelligent being. Particles of matter react to one another in different ways according to gravity and magnetic force. Inevitably matter will arrange itself into patterns.

The trouble with this question is that it infers that the individual stating it is uncomfortable with abstract ideas, they requiring a concrete answer in order to feel secure, an assurance that they are correct. They assume that someone created the universe, as if something with human attributes (that they can understand) had something to do with it. So we've got a insecure narrow minded individual looking for an intellectual fight. is it really worth trying to explain that there's not any concrete evidence for creation or for evolution theory as a whole? after all this person is already on the defense (I mean at least we have a theory.....) and acting aggressive (Try to shoot straight please; otherwise just don't answer.
And don't comeback at me with a question of your own.
answer or don't.) so they've demonstrated a lack of intellect, defensive and aggressive behavior, a narrow mind set that usually runs in hand with a lack of intellect, and blind ignorance to their own behavior (very Christ like I might add). typical fundie, fun piss off though.

(At least we have a theory.....)
It's an option, but not a very logical, rational, or reasonable option. Scientists can't figure out who created the creator. How the "creator" came about is a mystery to you just as it is to me. Mankind has the ability to create things in the mind: Werewolves, Fairies, Santa Clauses, Easter Bunnies, Reindeer with Blinking noses, Elves, Fraggles, Cyborgs, etc etc. It makes much more sense that Mankind would have created the creator as Science proves the existence of the universe. No one has proved the Creator's existence. So logically I have to believe we came from a ball of mass. As E=mc2 holds true with the universe. It's vast expansive infinite vacuum formed from a giant ball of light. What caused this light-mass, we aren't 100% on what happened, but we're on a better track than creating false idols to explain everything for us.

Atheists cannot sit back and do nothing. We can't face problems in the world such as:
(global warming, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, sting-rays being defensive, etc etc)
by using prayer, and science proves this.

Instead of wasting your time preparing for
an afterlife, spend this entire life preparing your future generations for their lives and so on.

The one's who didn't evactuate New Orleans
just sat back and prayed that the hurricane
wouldnt flood New Orleans. Wow!!! Their prayers
were answered huh? They didnt leave b/c they were
lazy and thought prayer could help divert the
hurricane. WRONG! We as a human race have to take on problems in the world Face-to-Face, not Face-to-Thought.

The difficulty comes when one tries to link the mysterious god that caused the universe with the God of the bible.

By reason alone we can come to the conclusion that the observable universe cannot exist independent of "something" beyond or before it, but one needs faith to believe that this is equivalent to the God of the Jewish-Christian-Islamic tradition.

I rely on science for evidence. I don't think the universe was "created," there is evidence for evolution through natural selection. The universe wasn't "created" 'cause for it to be created there would already be proof for a deity or supreme being(s). And really do we need to have a reason to enjoy the ride? I don't think so.
