Logically, you answered your question. You have a statement, "A relationship is not working." Followed by a question, "Do you still try?" Since your statement was a solid truth, unsupported by evidence, but none-the-less a true statement, the question is merely rhetorical and therefore does not hold water.
If a relationship is not working, either both parties must work on it or someone, if not both people probably should throw in the towel. It takes courage to admit when you can't make a relationship work. But every combination of human beings isn't going to work. We all have our differences and we can't expect to get along with everyone on this planet, that's unrealistic.
The greatest thing I've seen is two people who love each other and can part on good terms because they really were simply wrong for each other, or they brought out the worst in each other. That happens, it's life. If there are children involved, I hope they can see how much happier everyone will be when the parents aren't miserable.
Now, if you have not attempted to work on the relationship or are unwilling to go to counseling and are generally ill-willed about the relationship, it looks like you're looking for one single justification to end something that you just want to escape from, and that's unfair to all of us answering your question. But that's life too.
Either way, I do wish you the best. Good luck.
Peace.

There does come a point, if it really isn't working, & you have tried, & you know it just isn't going to work. If things arent working, I always try & work things out, it may just be a rough patch, if things don't get better you have to stop trying & break it off so you can move on to find something that is going to work without all the stress & heartache. It's sad when you love & care about someone & you have to let them go, but you'll be better off in the long run... you just have to stop & think, can I keep putting myself through this?

Only if you're a masochist. The brute force method doesn't work in relationships. Save time, move on and you'll find someone else.
