Is cigarette smoking against spirituality? What about moderate smokers?

Yes it does, regardless of how much you smoke. In the Bhagvad Gita, addiction (alcohol or otherwise) is classified as a sin. I don’t know what other religious scriptures say on this matter, but I’m pretty sure they would not advocate it. I know that Islam does not promote drinking so I think it will be the same for smoking. If you are Christian, well, I don’t think Jesus smoked. If you are the one who’s smoking I kindly advise you to stop. I know some guys do it to seem mature and impress ladies, but believe me, for many decent girls, it’s a turnoff. I’m sure your loved ones want you to live long. If you smoke and you want to quit, you can. The smoker goes to the cigarette; the cigarette does not come to the smoker. Anybody is stronger than a silly little cigarette. We must control our minds, not let the mind control us. When we are able to control the mind, it goes a long way towards spiritual development. Sorry if you thought I was talking down to you. I wasn’t. It was just some friendly advice.

Even in moderate amounts, tobacco is very harmful.

... A large, well formed study found that children were 8 TIMES MORE LIKELY to develop chronic obstructive lung disease if they lived with a smoker... It made no difference if they smoked around the children or not... it is a poison on your skin, clothes, and hair which is very harmful to children... If I remember the abstract correctly, parents of 9000 children suffering COLD were questioned yielding the result described. The statistical significance is "off the charts." It is virtually impossible to see that strong a correlation in a biological system.

It hinders everything.

One of my fellow students at seminary had quit smoking 15 years earlier. He could take a deep breath, hold it for several seconds, and exhale smoke.

Yes it does I think so because the people who smoke (more or less does not counts as per my thoughts) stop thinking the way that we use to do (non-smokers ) and they become care-free in a manner they are in another world of thier on pleasure.I know it well because one of my net friend is a smoker and I really find it when we do chat he is always in something fuss type of situation because the problem is that these are not connected to their spirits. thats not however with everyone and ever but they are like that well why are you asking so MR. For the Christian believer,..we believe that the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. By smoking you are profaning the Holy temple, in which God dwells.
For the Humanist, smoking has been scientifically proven to cause all kinds of significant health problems.
Smoking is just not all the great for any person...spiritually or otherwise!

It was the final straw that made me decide to stop trying to believe and fit into Christianity. Like you, it wasn't the only thing but it was a major one. There are accepting denominations and churches but exploring the Bible and why and how it condemns homosexuality (which is debatable as to intent and exactly WHAT is being condemned) led me to lots more questions with no answers. The main one being, how can a loving deity create me and then condemn me? I found the religion I was meant for and deities that had been waiting for me and didn't look back.
