Do you think people who have ADHD or ADD have a below average IQ? Some call ADHD people "special" but what does that mean? Is it just a feel good word or does it have some truth to it?

Many times people with ADHD or ADD that have high IQ's do not get diagnosed until late in their life, because they didn't experience the same difficulty in school that other people with ADHD or ADD did. They are able to "fake" it better because they are naturally smarter. I know someone with ADHD who has a genius level IQ, and he's always gotten okay grades with almost no effort just because he's so smart, but at the same time he can't study effectively, he has a very difficult time with his thought process, and he suffers from ADHD in other ways in his life. ADHD and ADD just isn't about acting out in school. It's an entirely different wiring of the brain. Some people can cope with it better because they do have higher IQ's, thus it isn't as noticed.

I'm a diagnosed add brat myslef. I took medication for years, due to add I also have dyslexia and dyscalculia. My IQ is 145 which Is abnormal for my age. I think it depends on the person. Sometimes people with add and or adhd also have other mental disabilities which might make them "special" as you put it.

IQ doesn't have much to do with it.

ADHD is a condition as is ADD. I have at least one stepson who has a very high IQ and is ADD.

I'm pretty smart and I have a little tendency toward ADD. But I've also learned how to manage it.

I'm a college graduate, a family man, and have been fairly successful in my life. I don't see a relationship with intelligence.

Okay, I'm gonna try not to take this post personally. Look back over my posts. Do I sound as if *I* have a "below-average I.Q."? I'm A.D.D. No, *not* ADHD, which entails an involvement of hyperactivity.
ADD and ADHD are like depression and other such disorders in that there's a chemical imbalance in the brain. (No, no cracks such as it being "all in my head" are allowed.)
I hope you didn't intend to insult someone on here. As is, I like "feel good" words, they make me feel "special".

I am really smart and I have ADD, specifically Adult ADD.
I am so smart that I picked up your prejudicial attitude towards individuals who you think may not be smart or able as you are.
Some people ask questions in the sincere hope that the knowledge gained will enlighten them
Other people ask questions in the hope that the knowledge gained will re-enforce their existing prejudices
So what have you learned ?
