For Indian railway:

Logon and choose from Menu: Stations (From to), date of departure, class of travel, mode of ticket (ticket sent to you through courier or ticket printed out).
After having entered the details, choose the available trains and select the train.
After the selection you have following options:
check seat availability, check fare, book
After ensuring the availability you can start the booking process.
Indian Railways allows payment through Debit Card (Internet banking plus it is for selected Indian banks only, like ICICI & SBI) as well as Credit cards
Before proceeding with the booking, you should have with you the card, the transaction password, photo identity card (like Driving license, voter card, passport, etc.) etc.
In case of an e-ticket you ought to have a printer connected to your computer to take out the print. This printed ticket can be carried alongwith the Identity Proof while travelling.
Tickets sent (it can be sent to any destination all over India) generally reach within three (maximum) days through Overnite courier.
It is advisable to book in morning hours (say 530 am) when the load on the IRCTC server is the least and your booking process takes hardly ten minutes.

In the UK go to any train company website, click buy tickets, fill out the forms, pay and your tickets arrive in the post a couple of days later (or you can collect from FastTicket machines installed at some stations)
There is the trainline but they are not reccomended. All the Train Company sites are the trainline but with [namecofcompany] logos. but there is a crucial difference - the trainline have a service charge, the train company branded sites don't

log on to www.irctc.co.in. you will have to register. just enter the place of departure and arrival and u will be provided with different options. you can even see the availability of tickets. select train, date and you will have to provide credit card details. dont worry. its pretty safe. you can either have the ticket delivered at an address of your choice. for that you have to note down the PNR number that the site will provide as you will have to quote it when the ticket is delivered. the other option is an e-ticket. if u opt for an e-ticket, you will have to provide a photo identification number detail like your Passport number, Driving License number or Voter ID number. once you see your e-ticket on the screen, just take a print-out. u can use that as a ticket. but u have to carry the Passport or License or Voter card during the journey, depending on which number you have entered in the form. thats about it. try it. its pretty simple. hope this helps you out.

For what country?
In the USA here is the link to Amtrak: http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage
In Europe go to: http://www.eurorailways.com/?OVRAW=european%20trains&OVKEY=european%20train&OVMTC=standard
In India:
http://www.indianrail.gov.in/ (this one took a long time to load)
Wanna take the train in Australia? Try this link"
http://www.railsnw.com/tours/australia/australia.htm
Too many more countries to guess what country you plan to travel to and as far as procedure goes I would just follow the prompts step by step on the screen.
Good luck and have fun travelling!!!
