handicap is a systeem whereby different players who have differrent abilities can play together with each haveing (in theory) an equal chance to win.

your handicap is the number of strokes you are from par--example: you're playing with a person who has a 5 handicap and you have a 20 handicap. that would mean that if par was 70 that he, officially, was listed as shooting a 75 on that course.

so if he beat you by less than 20 strokes then, using the handicap system, you would have won.

Welcome to THE game!
Glad to see you are enjoying it. A golf handicap makes it possible for you to play on an even footing with Tiger, Phil or Ernie.
Each hole is graded in difficulty from 1 to 18, with 18 being the easiest hole and 1 being the most difficult. These are called strokes. Your handicap is worked out by taking your score, for example 95 (thats how many shots it has taken you to complete 18 holes) and deducting the Par of the Course (normally 72), this gives you a figure "over Par", in this case 23 shots. The R&A have worked handicaps as follows: Add the 10 best (least shots) of your "over Par" scores for the last 20 Rounds of golf, divide those 10 scores by 10, and then take 85% of that total and that will give you your handicap.
Example: 20 Rounds of 95, that is 23 "over par"
Best 10 : 23 x 10 = 230
230 / 10 = 23 x 85% = 19.55
Therefore your handicap would be 20 (because you will have to round up that figure)

In Golf, when you are a novice, the club gives certain handicap, so as to, enable you to perform with seniors. If the Course has PAR score of 72, you, when competing with senior players, will be given handicap of certain shots, i.e. say 8 shots. You can complete, the course in 80 shots, to his 72.

a handicap is how many shots over the par (usually 72 for 18 holes) you take. for example if your handicap was 8 you shouldn't take any more than 80 shots in your round. 72+8. handicap of 21= total round of 93.
Just tell them you don't have one and continue to enjoy the game, or if your handicap is like mine...it's your swing
