I have an ingrown toenail/fungus in my middle toe, i have already seen a doctor, and have an appt. with a foot doctor to remove the nail next week...I have been putting neosporin on it, but about two hours ago, I started to get pain in the toe, and it has become unbearable. I can't stand on the foot or apply any pressure to it with out causing more pain. I tried placing the foot in warm water and that just caused my toe to burn as hell. My toe is now swollen. Is there any remedies I can do at home? It is nighttime right now, so doctors are not available. Please, any ideas to take away this pain please! HELP!!

I would try soaking the toe in warm epsom salts water. keep the affected foot elevated as much as you can. Tylenol or Advil for the discomfort and see a podiatrist as soon as possible. I feel your pain!

Soak it to keep that area soft, and make sure your shoes are not rubbing that exposed area. I did this many years ago to stop my ingrown toenails permantly. Take an emery board, and file across the top of your toenail, until the nail is soft on top, actually on the top, not the edge of the nail. (it will be a little tender for a day or two) Do this until you have a complete growth cycle of the nail (about a year, you will have to file it about every 6-8 weeks or so) It will make the nail stronger in the center, and weaker on the sides after a while, and the nails will naturally grown out of the skin, permantly. Then have regular pedicures to keep the nails trim and filed to the right shape. (You can get cheap pedis at a nail school)

Try taking two aspirins if you have them. Aspirin reduces inflammation, and I've found it improves the pain on things you wouldn't ever think you should take aspirin for.

People are usually told to apply ice or cold to swelling.

Is there any chance the neosporin got into the problem area and got the pain going? If there's the chance of that I'd put the foot back in water, only maybe cooler water. (I've done that one. You can have some open irritation or infection and think applying some cream will help, but it can burn like crazy; and it kind of gets into the skin and won't wash off easily.)

Any chance you have any wine in the house?

If you have to wait until 4:30 a.m. or so and get to a hospital.

I agree with the answer given by Neil S - you might also want to use an ice pack. Be sure the ice is insulated from direct contact with the skin by a layer of dry cloth - something like a dish towel or a wash cloth should work. Sounds like the toe/foot is infected; if your temperature goes up any significant degree, get to an emergency room!

Try some Campher, it is a liquid pain killer for things like that. Its in a small green bottle. And it works on all kinds of pains like that. Good luck and God bless you.

Just go to a podiatrist/specialist/emergency room and wait until you can see someone - tell them you are in too much pain to wait another week. Hopefully, when they see you are suffering they will help you straight away.

Wait until they cut it out - it will be the most welcome relief you have ever felt - Good Luck!

Your fungus problem almost falls into the "too much information" category; but will give you the benefit of the doubt. First, get "Alleve" for pain. Maybe Solarcaine? Thats a topical antispetic that might take away some poin. Maybe "Tenactin" . Not a doctor here so take advice with caution.

See a doctor ASAP. In the meantime , put your feet up [above your heart]. Try cold instead of hot water. Take pain killers [paracetamol].

Try soaking your toe in torpintine. You can find this at Wal-Mart or Walgreens. Its a type of oil. It is an old fashion remedy.
