Somebody posted a question on here that got me thinking...

Why is it more socially acceptable to "bash"/make jokes/generalize, about some religions (Christianity, Islam, Mormons, etc) but it is in no way socially acceptable to do the same to Judaism and Jews? Many, if not most religions have also faced genocide, slaugher, and persecution througout history. However, one can pick apart the faults and actions of religious leaders (molesting priests, bombing muslims, etc) but if one does the same in regards to the Jews, then one is immediately labeled "Anti-Semite".

Can anyone give me a clear-intelligent answer to this? I keep telling myself it's the holocaust, but there are things just as bad and worse going on right now!

Mostly I think it's just that people want to ask about things they think will get a nod from others. That's why they bash certain religions, and not others. It seems to me they're taking the path of least resistance. In a lot of ways, it's also a form of cowardice. It's the ones who stand alone to voice their points of view who are the brave ones. Peace.

People are always afraid of what they don't understand. In all honesty you may as well ask why do people prefer apples over oranges. Humans are intelligent creatures but who knows the reason to why they do most things they do. It simply comes down to you as a individual and what your stance on issues will be negative or positive. but there is not a answer to this question besides, That's Life.

I think you're partly right. There is so much historical baggage with regard to bashing Jews--and while people don't have any problem allying themselves with blasphemers, they most certainly wouldn't want anyone to perceive them as allying themselves with those who have committed genocide.

That is, for the hateful, there are limits to what they want their hatred to be perceived as--and these limits are things that are swayed by public opinion.

I'm probably not being as clear as I would like. Let me try again....

People who bash Christianity hate Jesus and will do anything to blasphemy him. Many also hate God--as they seek to fault-find with God. But these people still want to be perceived as erudite, worldly, and sophisticated--and fair-minded. So, they don't say anything that anyone else could interpret as being sympathetic to the Nazi cause. Because while they hate, they don't want to be perceived as being hateful.

They want to have their cake and eat it too.

As for Islam, it is totally fashionable and "okay" to hate Muslims. This may change in the future, but today, if you're American, you're not stepping on the majority's sense of good taste if you say a bad word or two about Muslims.

The problem is that none of these haters will just come forth and be brave and honest enough to say, "You know, I hate you people." They have to couch it in terms that try to convince others that they are the intelligentsia.

Fools who have a decent enough vocabulary.

you obviously have not studied history have you...

want me to give you a list of the number of times that the Catholic Church as banned the practice of Judaism or burned the Talmud in public?

this reaction is new to history and is the result of the horrors of the Holocaust, but as you look around its all ready starting to fade and history will resume the course it has taken the last 2,500 years.
