Its not much when compared to the witch craze, mainly perpetrated in Protestant countries.
The Spanish Inquisition was a buissness of the Spanish state.
How come people exaggerate and always want to blame the Catholic Church for every conceiveble evil?
To me it seems like anti-Catholic propaganda from Protestants and scoffers at religion.

"How come people exaggerate and always want to blame the Catholic Church for every conceiveble evil?"
A good question Carl. What we Protestants don't seem to realize is that people lump all Christians together, and we all get blamed for it.
Many protestants get their information from spurious books like Babylon Mystery Religion and The Two Babylons. niether of which are reliable.

The Spanish Inquisition happened as a result of Jews claiming to be Christians, but continuing to live as Jews.
There were no Protestants involved.
The Spanish government, which was Catholic, decided to find out why all Christians were no longer following Christian practices, as this was the cause of major scandal, at the time.
The government proceeded to "inquire" of suspect individuals, many of whom would not admit their misdeeds without some added inducement (torture was common in those days).
Eventually, the issue was resolved.
In truth, no one knows exactly how many were involved.
People were always given a chance to admit their errors and repent, before any punitive action was taken.
Those who refused were typically imprisoned, interrogated, and if they still refused to admit to their offense, shown the instruments of torture.
If they were still not forthcoming, and sufficient evidence existed against them, torture was often used to gain a confession.
Then, a trial court or tribunal would finally rule.
40? 400? 4000? Even a single death was unfortunate.
Blame the Catholic church? That's a stretch, as this was always a Spanish government matter that was only related to a serious religious issue of the day.

And that's not even mentioning how Protestants herded a bunch of the Catholics in Germany into a village once and killed them all... The death toll was in the tens of thousands from that alone.
(Not WWII, but soon after the Protestant Reformation)
