Your body needs a certain number of calories per day to run your bodily functions and nourish you for your activities. Say, 2000 calories.

You gain a pound for every time you take in 3500 calories more than your bodily needs. So, say you "should be" eating 2000 calories per day to keep your weight steady. If you eat 2350 calories a day instead (350 over your bodily requirements), in ten days you will gain one pound (350 cal over, X ten days = 3500 excess = one pound).
