I have 4 cats that were outdoor cats and once I brought them in they were fine being inside, it is much safer inside, just make sure to get your cat spayed/neutered. Best of luck.

Firstly, congrats on wanting to keep your kitty safer!
I think the process needs to be done quite slowly. First off, make sure that after his dinner time, you close all the windows, and keep kitty inside just for the night times, and let him out again in the morning after breakfast. Be sure to show him where the litter box is going to be! This will get him used to being indoors at night.
When he's inside for the evening, spend a whole lot of time playing with him, and getting him tired for bed! I suggest one of those lazer pointers so you can sit on the couch - and he can chase the little red dot like crazy! Also, invest in a good cat tree so he's got something to maul when they go mad in the evenings! Go and get him a lot of different toys - stuffed animals, balls with bells, catnip toys etc. Only leave a few out in the evenings and rotate them every now and again so he doesn't get bored with them.
Once he's adjusted to being in in the evenings, your'e gonna have to move onto keeping him indoors during the day. Some ways to help with this adjustment are the following.
Buy kitty treats and hide them around your house, so he's got something to do while you are away. If you can, invest in a small fishtank so he's got something to watch! If not, and you are on the ground floor, put up a bird feeder outside a window, so that he can sit there and watch the birds. Again, leave out some of his favourite toys and rotate them. I've heard of one persons suggestion on here that you could buy a hamster and put it in one of those balls that they roll around in, and leave it out during the day - but it does seem a little cruel (funny, but cruel!)
I'm not sure what your reason is for keeping him indoors (ie, are you moving to a place with no outside access) but if thats not the case - timing this whole procedure with the on-set of winter is a great idea, kitties tend to want to be where it's warm so if the weather is getting colder, he's not going to mind as much!
You are going to have to deal with him wanting to escape, and trying to get outside, to his mind, you are depriving him, so he's going to complain at first! But if you persevere, and make sure that you show him a whole HEAP of love and affection, he'll adjust. Soon, you will be reaping the benefits of having an indoor only kitty - they are healthier, they are way more affectionate and lovable and they live so much longer without the threat of illness, car accidents, dog maulings etc!

my cat was the reverse, when we moved into our new apt with our own outside door, well she just loves it, as for your dilemma, might be hard, but it can be done, as long as you have,nt moved to a high apartment complex, good luck.
