I have tried so many products with no luck.
Can anyone tell me a really good fly spray for my horse, either to make or to buy. I need something that lasts several days and repels mosquitos and horse flies.

I like Tri-Tec or Endure
They are both expensive but they seem to work better for me than any of the others. They seem to keep the flys away for longer than any of the others.
Endure is sweat proof and stays on.
I also mix my own from a couple of things
Natures Defense and a Stock Tox concentrate
It works fiarly well and is much cheaper that buying it pre mixed.
Tri-Tec also comes in a concentrate and you can mix it .

I have found that mixing baby oil with orange cleaner concentrate works well. The oil makes it stick to the horse's coat and the orange (it works like a citronella candle because they're made from citrus) repels all sorts of bugs. I even sprayed the barn next to the hay bunk and the flies all left that area too. Just be sure the orange cleaner is not so strong that it will burn your horse. Try a little bit of it on your hand first.

Hi there;

I know of a few that may help you out.
1. as mentioned a vinegar solution of 1 part vinegar to 5 parts water sprayed over the horse.

2. lavender oil solution. You can add the lavender oil to any of the vinegar solutions or garlic solutions.

3. press garlic of one bunch to 5 parts water. Leave over night to stand and cure. Strain into a spray bottle and cover the entire horse.

4. The first time your horse works up any kind of a sweat all the topical applications of bug repellent will come off. You will have to reapply as your horse looses the protection. Along with the topical applications add garlic (powered form works best as an additive) to your horses feed at night. This is a long term solution to the insect issue but rest assured it does work! You will find less bugs around your horse spring, summer and fall.

I use the Repel-X concentrate and mix it about 2x stronger than the recommended amount, but if your horse sweats, it will come off.

There is also Equi-spot, which is a spot-on that lasts a several days, supposed to be really effective, but it's a little costly if you've got multiple horses.

www.countrysupply.com has some great prices for these kinds of things.

Vinegar mixed with water works well, but only for a couple of hours. Try a stronger concentration (or pure) of vinegar.
