He has reached his nasty little adolescent phase, and he will be avoidant and difficult to live with for a while. At this time, he is having to choose between bonding with a mate and bonding with you, and he is not happy about not having a mate. This can be overcome...if you get him a mate, he will NEVER bond with you. If you want him to be your companion, show him a lot of respect and patience at this time. Don't handle him a lot, just keep him company from a distance. In four to six months, he will settle down and start wanting to be near you again.

How large is his cage?
It should be length ways, more than 80cm.
Mind u, even in the largest of cages they still try to escape.
Reasons for this behaviour may include
1. Not getting any time out of the cage, if you are to own a bird you must realise that they need daily time out of their cage, for at least an hour. If you are concerned about him flying away or not being able to catch him, find someone experienced to trim the flight feathers.
2. A bird that trys to escape non stop, is a bird that is not happy.
3. Do make sure his cage is large enough, Is it furnished well?, eg: NAtural thick perches, greenary (trees) non poisionus of course, hanging toys, a mirror if alone, a nest basket to sleep in, good nutritious food, more fruit and vegies , breads, egg & biscuit mix, etc. spinach, peas, corn on cob, multigrain breads, mung beans are among my peachfaces fav's, another fav is millet spray. Also include cuttlefish for good calcium.
Make sure your bird gets natural sunlight daily.
Exercise, time with you, good nutrition, Fun things in the cage, trees to crawl around and chew on, natural branches, a pleasant cage to go in will make all the difference.
Imagine if you had the life of your bird, would u b happy?
Put yourself in his spot, and see if you can see why he is behaving in this way?

All Lovebirds are escape artists. They are extremely intelligent and if you cage doesn't have a somewhat complex mechanism for closing, the bird will probably figure out how to open it. Buy the way whoever says you have to keep 2 lovebirds, doesn't know anything about lovebirds. That's an old wives tale. If you have 1 it will bond with you. If you have 2 they will both almost completely ignore you and bond with eachother.

My lovebirds did this when I had them in a cage with sliding doors. They did it just for the fun of it-to chew up the paper outside of their cage and torment the other birds that they got out and the others didn't. It was just a game for them. If this is a problem for you, you can always use a twist tie on their door.

it is lonely and wishes to have company and if you dont show much care for it besides water and food it will want to live and find other birds. try buying a partner if you dont have time to spend with the love bird. if you dont trim its feathers they will most likely leave because they dont like being caged. I have monk parrots and they love to walk around the house so we trim their feathers once they grow and they are weird we can live the cage open outside and they wont live the backyard only if they see me approaching them but they will run to me

I had a friend that kept lovebirds... he said you have to have 2 or they will die of lonliness. Perhaps he's lonely and looking for a friend.
