They're wonderful!! No, they won't block out the jet overhead, but they take care of just about everything else. Not sure how they'll fare against a neighbor's pounding bass (no noise regulations in your area?).
I think they would be uncomfortable for sleep.

Maybe he should at that ! and yes they really do work very well. and yes you can sleep in them as well a little uncomfortable but it can be done never the less.

Don't buy Bose, they are a cheap ripoff. They are like fashion designers, you are basically buying a name. If you want real professional headphones, go with Sennheiser.
