Would it be considered a sin to commit good deeds only to avoid going to hell? If so, wouldn't a huge percent of humans go to hell simply because they did God's work for selfish reasons? Wouldn't the only way to get into heaven be to have no fear of God's wrath, or hell, and do good for the sake of your fellow humans?

A good deed is only a good deed if done for the right reasons

God knows that in the current state of things, it's difficult to even do good. But in the end, a good deed is good as long as the intention is good. God can read hearts, states the bible. So he will know if we're being sincere or not.
Actually, the bible states that we must fear God...and through Godly fear we can learn to be obedient. Funny enough, it's also the things we don't do that will guarentee everlasting life...like don't commit adultery etc. We don't do these things, even though they are part of nature, like lying. It requires an effort on our part. We put in this effort bcos we love God AND bcos we want to live forever.

Most of humanity believes this myth that performing good deeds gets us to heaven. This is not true. Believing that Jesus' death on the cross alone settled my debt with God is what gets me to heaven.

Then why do good deeds? One, Jesus modeled how we are to live our lives here on earth and we are to follow His example; two, because Jesus said that if we love Him, we will obey His commands; and three, the Bible says that we were created to do good works in Christ Jesus. Works don't save us, but they should be telling others that we are saved.

BTW, I learned a long time ago that doing something good in order to not do what is right is wrong.

Just doing good deeds won't get a person to Heaven. If that's why someone is doing them, they're wasting their time. Believing in God and accepting Jesus as Savior is the way to Heaven.

Sometimes you have to punish your children in order for them to learn what is right and what is wrong. If the child does right to avoid punishment should you punish him for that?

If some does good deeds for the wrong reasons that should not negate the good deed. If a sinner doesn't sin and has ask for forgiveness he is no longer a sinner.

Good deeds are good deeds, whatever the driving force.

How about the idea that God loves sinners and loves to forgive them being used as a reason to sin to gain more of God's love and forgiveness?

If you're not already one, you would make a great litigator! A lot of people are going to need your services if the Christian myth about Judgment Day is true! Not only that...

You might have been helpful to poor old W.C. Fields. Apparently he wasn't well and believed he was going to die. A friend came by for a visit and found him in bed reading a bible. Stunned, given W.C.'s reputation for copious drinking and carousing, he asked him why he was reading a bible of all things. W.C. answered, "I'm looking for loopholes."

Sure we are to put out faith in action. However, to get to heaven ,'the good' which, God wants his children to do, is to trust what He has told them and not thier own ideas.

It is like, if you told your young child, whom you love and don't want to be seperated from, that if they were hungry to come to you and you would feed them.

Nevertheless they decide, based upon their own reasoning, that the good they do by fixing you breakfast will be so pleasing to you, it will out weigh being disobedient children. So they proceed to fire up the stove and try to cook, a task that you and only you are capable of doing.

Their motives may have been to please you. Notwithstanding that fact, you also recognise they were motivatged by wanting to feel grown up and act like a grown up, when they aren't grown up. They are children.

Sometimes we do the same thing with God. We want to feel like the grown up and 'relying on ourselves' to be deserving of heaven, because we have done so much good.

Spiritual growth is all about getting right. sized. It is a paradox, in that, spiritually we grow down to size and become like little children wholly dependent upon God.

Proverbs 14:12
There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

Matthew 18:3
And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven

That is an imperfect way of approaching it, but I suspect that if you were to act in this way, eventually you would learn to love. How could you do good deed after good deed and not be moved by the experience?

We are human, and are inherently flawed and rebellious. You are correct in your statement that good deeds done for selfish reasons is sinful. But...we are human, and this, unfortunately, is par for the course.

The original sin wasn't an act, it was an attitude. Satan rebelled against God because he wanted worship for who he was, the loveliest creation at that time. The created wanted that which was due the Creator. Jesus Christ came to earth to demonstrate for us how to truly please God, to point out to us that true humility is knowing what we are, and submitting to this fact.

You can't earn your way to Heaven. We are all sinners, and therefore deserve Hell. But because of Christ's atoning sacrifice on the Cross, if we believe He died for our sins, and we ask Christ for forgiveness, we will be saved.
