My cat is fighting for his life tonight, they think he has a virus. He's 3 yrs old and a big boy (10+ pounds)
What are his chances of beating this fever? They gave him antibiotics and something under his skin to rehydrate him. Has anyone ever had a cat with such a high fever? He's only been unwell 3 days tops. I am thinking if he makes it through the night he'll probably be ok, but even the Vet said he wasn't sure he'd make it.....
(Please pray for our beloved Dottie)

I'd like to thank everyone for their heartfelt wishes for our Dotties recovery. He's had bloodwork done and they have ruled out FIV, they sent the samples for some further testing. The good news is his fever has gone down and he looked much more alert today. The Vet said to expect him to take 4 to 5 days to turn around, but he looked alot stronger and even sat up and came over for fuss, whereas yesterday he couldn't ever hold up his head. Things are looking alot better.

You and Your beloved Dottie are in my thoughts tonight...
Chances are he'll make it if they can get his fever down...
The average temp of a cat is 100.5-102.5 anything above 104 is critical despite what the previous submissions say.
...antibiotics are a good start, along with re-hydration... have the vet do blood work as well as a urinalysis... when was the last time he urinated? and was he struggling? a blocked cat can be fatal.
If it is a virus, has he been fully vaccinated? if so, chances are good he'll pull through.
Fevers are also an indication of infection... has he been in any cat fights recently? or have any other injuries??
Fevers are dangerous, especially if they are of an unknown origin. Lab work will help tell your vet what is going on internally, and will be a guide for the next steps in treatment... the worst thing you can do is nothing... I hope all works out for your kitty, and hang in there.. He is young. Trust your vet, most viruses have a cure or a course of treatment (even if lifelong) the ones that don't we vaccinate against. Best Wishes, Meg

105 is NOT a low grade fever for a cat. It's true, they run higher than humans, but it's still serious. Did they run bloodwork at the vet's? Did they do an leukemia/FIV test? Does he go outside? If he does, then the reason for his fever could be an infectious disease, or something as simple as an abscessed bite wound that should clear with antibiotics. Make sure he continues to eat and drink - force him a little if you have to. The fluids and antibiotics should help, but the vet may need to get more aggressive with treatment plans if he doesn't start getting better soon!

Actually, 105 is not a high fever for a cat. Cat's body temp is higher than humans, so 105 is considered a mild fever for a cat. I think your Dottie will be just fine. Make sure he doesn't get dehydrated again, and give the antibiotics religiously. Good Luck!

Regular cat temperatures are about 102 degrees, so 105 degrees over isn't as life threatening as it is to humans. I think your cat will make it through the night. Good luck

First of all THANK YOU for taking the baby boy to the dr instead of just hoping it will go away. Poor kitty. I have never heard of this but hopefully you got him there fast enough. I will pray for him as he has a wonderful owner to go home to.
