Yes, I recommend creating backup files to a removeable or separate drive. Alternatively, create a system restore point using the System Restore function of your OS (worst case scenario that the initial upgrade fails).
READ and follow all prompts as you actually proceed with your upgrade.

Absolutely. BUT, any time you make a system change that drastic, you would be a fool NOT to make a backup.
Once you have your backup in hand, just put the XP Pro with SP2 cd in the drive and run the upgrade.
If you you get a message similar to "the version of windows you have is newer than the one you are trying to install" then this means your CD does NOT have Service Pack 2 incorporated into it - you can create a disk that does using a process called slipstreaming and then perform the upgrade.
Info on how to slipstream:

In theory, yes. Pro basicly unlocks some usability in home and installs a few extra tools.
In practice, there's a fair chance everything would go smoothly but M$ is known for messing things up in a major way. If you really need XP pro, make sure to back up everything before upgrading.

I think you can, check out www.microsoft.com.
And to keep your data, better to save it first before doing the upgrade.
