One of my Christian friends talked about singing a folk song there, and I've heard about people playing drum sets there. I know about the church choir and organ music stuff in more conventional churches, but what is the other kind of music that some churches do? What is the branch of Christianity that embraces it? Why do other branches seem to abhor folk music?

Our church service is tradtional, we play the old hymns and follow a liturgy written in God's own words from Scripture, the same format the apostles used. We have some of their ancient church services.

We believe we are there to worship and not entertain or be entertained, and we believe our worship service is sacred. So we aren't as concerned with making people tap their toes or whatever - we do have some rousing pot lucks though when the service is over!!

Some churches opt for only vocal music, as in church choirs, others prefer organ music. Some of the newer branches enjoy folk music, or music with guitars and drums and any other sort of instrument. Some look down on ANY music in church and don't feel it belongs there at all.
Why do some branches abhor folk music and others adore it? Why do some people like chocolate cake and others hate it?
It's just a matter of preference, and in the case of churches and music, tradition and time have gradually restricted the musical, or non-musical, contents of the service of worship.
I believe that if God didn't want us to make music, He would not have given us voices to sing, or the intelligence to make and play instruments, and by using these gifts we are praising Him.

Well, not that i'm blaming the church or saying that the church is false, well you will get alot of disapointment when you know more about the church (the people inside it), and ussually those peoples are those that doing service in the church.

One thing i tell you that there's more false people then the right, and it's also the same in church. Those people that know little but think that they know much are the kind of people that i'm talking about. Probabbly they're afraid of doing mistakes or just want to show that they know much and/or have power in the church (organization) while what they don't know is that they're become the false prophet and the stumble stones for other (as what Jesus said about the end of days).
Those people made rules, judgments, decicions, etc; in the name of God while it's not, and because they're in some degree of position in the church then the people will easyly believe because they're afraid if they did wrong and suffer the phunisment.

And some is a real dirty people in the church...

Well, i'm a Christian, I'm also a musician and i dedicate my music for the Lord.
I've been in a servive in the church (Sunday School Teachers and musician), but then i'm quiting from the Church because i feel disapointed by those people, and also because my vision is diferent from they're...
So now i do my servive in music for God out side the Church...
Well, service is not only in the church right?

btw, I'm doin my thesis for my music bachelor about "the people's Apreciation to the Function of Spiritual Music", and it was talking about why some Churches don't allow some kind of music and instruments in their church. It should be finished in February 2007. And I also play 2 of my music (Spiritual music) for my last recital, 1 is played wit a band and the other with and ansamble of percussions and probably with choir and brass...
I'm also ging to make a video on it...
So if someone is interested in what i'm doing, you can contact me.... or even help me with it...

Many churches follow man made traditions and not what the Bible says. For instance, they won't allow guitars which are very similar to instruments mentioned in the Bible but they have an organ which had yet to be invented when the Bible was written.

It's not the instruments or the music that matters, it's what the lyrics say. Do they glorify God in a Scriptural way? That's what matters.

Psalms 33:1 Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. 2 Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. 3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

I enjoy a variety of Christian music, but I enjoy the intimacy of contemporary Christian praise and worship because of the closeness of God. I think that the Vineyard Music is the Best.

As a church musican in Roman Catholic Churches, I've worked with kids, teens, and adults; choirs, soloists, small groups; piano, organ, electric keyboard; drums, guitar, bass; violin, flute, trumpet, saxophone, French horn...

It's all about choosing good music and performing it well!

well many christian churches play more conventional music to appeal to church goers but it all is in the form of worshiping the father and no matter how you worship him as long as u surrender to him you could sing music any way u like

One of the whole themes of the Bible is Worshiping God through music. Its a universal language and permeates our souls and the Bible says that Gods preasance in habits the Praises of his people!

Psalm 149
1 Praise the LORD. [a]
Sing to the LORD a new song,
his praise in the assembly of the saints.

2 Let Israel rejoice in their Maker;
let the people of Zion be glad in their King.

3 Let them praise his name with dancing
and make music to him with tambourine and harp.

4 For the LORD takes delight in his people;
he crowns the humble with salvation.

5 Let the saints rejoice in this honor
and sing for joy on their beds.

6 May the praise of God be in their mouths
and a double-edged sword in their hands,

7 to inflict vengeance on the nations
and punishment on the peoples,

8 to bind their kings with fetters,
their nobles with shackles of iron,

9 to carry out the sentence written against them.
This is the glory of all his saints.
Praise the LORD.
