It happens to me occasionally - there is a localized stabbing pain when I take a deep breath.
Mine goes away after a while.
A more severe type is I think called a pneumothorax - it is when you get an air bubble between the outside lining of your lung and the chest wall of muscle and bone. Your lungs depend on the vacuum created by your diaphragm to draw in breath. If this vacuum is disrupted, like with pneumothorax or collapsed lung, then you have difficulty breathing, and the condition is serious enough to kill you. I dunno if this corresponds with your problem. Have you been to a music concert recently? Sometimes it happens spontaneously.
Of course, you might be in love ;-)

It could be anything, but whatever it is, as you know, its not supposed to hurt to breathe. You need to get it checked out.
A rib injury could make breathing hurt, but usually its some kind of respiratory infection. It could be pleurisy or pneumonia.
Go get it checked out.
